About the Author
Dr. M.A. Ramlu obtained his B.Sc. from Madras University in 1948, a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering from Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and a PhD in Mining Engineering from Bergakadamie Clausthal, Germany, 1956. Dr. Ramlu then joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in 1958, where he served as a professor and head of the Department of Mining Engineering for over 20 years. He also served as the dean of Sponsored Research and Consultancy, deputy director, and acting director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, between 1980 and 1987. After retirement in 1987, he settled in Hyderabad, India, and serves as a frequent consultant to the industry and the government. He received the Prof. S. K. Bose Memorial Teaching Award in 2009, the Thacker Coal Mining Gold Mining Medal from the Mines, Metals & Geological Institute of India (MMGI), and the Lifetime Achievement Medal from Mining Engineers' Association of India (MEAI) in 2013. Dr. Ramlu is the author of several books in the area of mining engineering and safety.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Beautiful illustrations and a tedious rhyming text add up to disappointment in this counting book. Hulme uses eight-line singsong rhymes to show sea creatures on each double-page spread. Simple examples of addition and subtraction are introduced, and the equation is shown at the bottom of the page. For example, "A stingray digs two sandy clams,/Down on the ocean floor./Then plows around until it finds/ One...two...three...four more./It chews three clams for breakfast/And crunches three for brunch-/So all the clams are gobbled up/And none are left for lunch." At the bottom of the page is the equation: 2 clams + 4 clams - 3 clams - 3 clams = 0 clams. The illustrations of marine life are softly hued; children will enjoy looking at them. There is a description of the animals in the back of the book, but the mathematical concepts are never discussed or explained. There is a great demand for beginning math books, but Sea Sums will only be useful to adults who are willing to spend a lot of time getting young listeners ready for these concepts.

Similar in look and concept to Hulme and Schwartz's Sea Squares (1991), this picture book teaches about creatures of a coral reef and shows addition and subtraction visually as well as verbally and numerically. For example, one spread states, "One lionfish is bristling / With pointed, poison spines; / Two others flutter from a cove / Like feathered porcupines. / Around their faces, frilly fins / Spread like a lion's mane. / When one swims off to find some food, / Two fluffy fish remain. 1 lionfish + 2 lionfish -1 lionfish = 2 lionfish." The illustration on the left-hand page shows all three fish swimming; on the right side, two fish remain, and the other is barely visible as it swims out of sight. Wonderful rhymes paired with exciting illustrations

This is one of my favorite books to read to my children. The rhyming text makes it lyrical to read, while my eye easily wanders over the illustrations, while reading it for the umpteenth time. I recommend it unreservedly, as well as its companion, SEA SQUARES, by the same pair.

this book was amazing!

i was really shocked to find out how much me and the author have in common (the author has Asperger's syndrome which is what I've been wondering if i have for a few years), he too wasn't diagnosed until mid-life. same with the sensitivity, high emotion, not understanding or having interest in people. when i was a real little kid, whenever i saw someone crying i immediately cried just because they were. i swear it's like i felt the same pain they were feeling and i was inconsolable. I've never met in my whole life someone else with empathy like that until i read this. i thought there was something wrong with me. same with all the other traits we on the ASD have.

1. i love that he clearly states several times "always assume intellect." about people with autism because i like to believe most people with disabilities, even the really severe and dependent, are a completely normal intellectual person, whole soul on the inside of their broken body. it's just that they either don't communicate well, or not at all so those around them, family, teachers, caretakers, may never know this. but maybe since William Stillman wrote this book who knows how many people have been more than helped with knowing their autistic person. if you have someone in your family, your spouse, neighborhood, school, at work, church etc. etc. (or you have it) and you have an open mind to spiritual possibilities, this book will rock your world.

2. there's personal accounts of those he met, parents, kids and grown adults affected with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their personal stories.

3. I find anyway, in my opinion, their lives and experiences to be a true inspiration that the mainstream public has to know exists. it's tragic how underestimated they are because of their symptoms and reading this gave me hope people like William are shining some light to help tell so many people's truths. i mean some things people shared with their Facilitated Communication (typing) device that happened and/or continue to happen are what most of us would call miracles. it made family openly weep from joy and shock in front of "Bill." who they probably spent only a few minutes with at the time. it boggles my mind that none of their experiences are news to tell those affected that your child being diagnosed with any Autism Spectrum Disorder isn't only horribly tragic your life is over kind of speech. that's the attitude i hear too often. but that good things, rather amazing things can also happen.

4. my favorite part is that what i read from the, how William puts it, "exquisitely sensitive" with autism made me realize life itself, everything we experience, every living creature is a gift and a miracle. all we have to do is open our eyes and actually look and listen to our life and all that is around us. heck, all of it, every chapter was my favorite part. i really hope you enjoy it. it helped me and opened my eyes and heart so much spiritually.

I could not put this book down. William Stillman has the ability to understand those with autism because he himself went through the pain of being on the spectrum. His ability to teach people how to work with and treat these people was a true eye opener. God bless him and his work.

so I was happy to see the authors had produced a companion volume ...

I also have the previous book, Masterly Batting, so I was happy to see the authors had produced a companion volume on bowling. A lot of the same high-end cricket writers are here, e.g. Rob Smyth, Stephen Chalke, but there are some new ones such as David Tossell, though I must admit I didn't know Sid Waddell's son was a cricket writer!

As to the contents, it's along the same lines as Masterly Batting, though the criteria used to rank is necessarily different. As to the the rankings themselves, I don't really have a problem with them though I was surprised at the winner. In any case, all of the great bowlers you'd expect to see are represented, such as Warne, Murali, Trueman, Ambrose, Barnes...and Stuart Broad.

As with the previous book on batting (Masterly Batting: 100 Great Test Centuries), the authors (or editors) have given it the soft touch by saying "100 Great Test Performances", though by ranking them 100 down to 1 they're obviously saying these are the best - why not just come out and say it?

Anyway, I enjoyed this book, the writing is great and from some of the best cricket writers, such as David Frith and more recent writers like Rob Smyth. The method is well described and I was particularly impressed by how they determine the "worth" or value of a performance - seems groundbreaking and a whole new way to separate performances rather than based on wickets first then average

Marty Strasen is the sports producer for Tampa Bay Online (TBO.com) and writes regularly for The Tampa Tribune. He has co-authored the Michael Jordan Scrapbook and Basketball Almanac and is a former assistant editor of Basketball Weekly and Football News. He is a 1989 graduate of the University of Notre Dame.

Introduction

Perhaps no one should be surprised at the global court on which the game of basketball is now played. After all, Dr. James Naismith, the man who first hoisted a peach basket at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts, hailed from Canada.

Glance at the rosters for the 2004 National Basketball Association All-Star Game. Among the stars were Tim Duncan (U.S. Virgin Islands), Dirk Nowitzki (Germany), Andrei Kirilenko (Russia), Peja Stojakovic (Serbia, Montenegro), Jamaal Magloire (Canada), and Yao Ming (China). As of March 9, 2004, NBA rosters featured 66 international players from 33 countries.

Some 55 years after that day in 1891 when Dr. Naismith invented the game, the Basketball Association of America -- a forerunner of the NBA -- was formed. The average salary then was $4,500 per year and the average player stood a shade under 6 feet, 4 inches.

If Dr. Naismith would have been stunned by the growth of his game in its first half-century of existence, imagine his reaction if he could sit courtside today, watching the 7'5" Yao Ming battle the 340-pound Shaquille O'Neal, or the youthful acrobatics of rising stars LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony.

Yes, basketball has grown in myriad ways since Naismith first threw a ball into a basket and needed a ladder to retrieve it. At its basic level, however, it remains among the purest athletic tests of all -- a sport that has captivated an international audience while remaining a mainstay in American towns large and small. This book takes you inside the game at its highest level. About the Author
American born Napoleon Hill is considered to have influenced more people into success than any other person in history. He has been perhaps the most influential man in the area of personal success technique development, primarily through his classic book Think and Grow Rich which has helped million of the people and has been important in the life of many successful people such as W. Clement Stone and Og Mandino. Napoleon Hill was born into poverty in 1883 in a one-room cabin on the Pound River in Wise County, Virginia. At the age of 10 his mother died, and two years later his father remarried. He became a very rebellious boy, but grew up to be an incredible man. He began his writing career at age 13 as a mountain reporter for small town newspapers and went on to become America's most beloved motivational author. Fighting against all class of great disadvantages and pressures, he dedicated more than 25 years of his life to define the reasons by which so many people fail to achieve true financial success and happiness in their life. During this time he achieved great success as an attorney and journalist. His early career as a reporter helped finance his way through law school. He was given an assignment to write a series of success stories of famous men, and his big break came when he was asked to interview steel-magnate Andrew Carnegie. Mr. Carnegie commissioned Hill to interview over 500 millionaires to find a success formula that could be used by the average person. These included Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Elmer Gates, Charles M. Schwab, Theodore Roosevelt, William Wrigley Jr, John Wanamaker, WIlliam Jennings Bryan, George Eastman, Woodrow Wilson, William H. Taft, John D. Rockefeller, F. W. Woolworth, Jennings Randolph, among others. He became an advisor to Andrew Carnegie, and with Carnegie's help he formulated a philosophy of success, drawing on the thoughts and experience of a multitude of rags-to-riches tycoons. It took Hill over 20 years to produce his book, a classic in the Personal Development field called Think and Grow Rich. This book has sold over 7 million copies and has helped thousands achieve success. The secret to success is very simple but you'll have to read the book to find out what it is! Napoleon Hill passed away in November 1970 after a long and successful career writing, teaching, and lecturing about the principles of success. In defense of a particular audio rendition of this work, I'll make a few points about what we commonly refer to as The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill.

Since few reviews list them, the 17 principles of success according to Dr. Hill are as follows:

One reviewer here remarked that you ought to just skip this entire book set and instead get Think and Grow Rich, however a cursory examination of the table of contents for Law of Success and Think and Grow Rich shows that the latter book covers a slightly different set of topics. As a personal fan of both the science of self-improvement and audiobooks, I recommend against both the BN Publishing edition and the Audible download edition.

The Audible edition is an earlier rendition of the text which contains only 15 original main principles, whereas Mr. Hill gradually expanded his Law of Success central thesis from 15 to 17 over the course of his later life. Additionally, I advise against any Audible product because I cannot in good faith suggest your purchase of any sort of digital media download which contains Digital Rights Management (DRM). With DRM downloads, you run into headaches with playback, copying or burning and ultimately you don't really own the media you paid for.

The BN Publishing edition gives the impression of being extremely poorly executed and the final product leaves a bit to be desired. The two-cd set is well-printed, but the text is an earlier version, the quality of the MP3's sound terrible, and the back cover points to the wrong homepage for the publisher(!).

Therefore, with neither package do you get the "real deal."

The best-quality audiobook of The Law of Success is the High Roads Media edition, which you can buy either from the Napoleon Hill Foundation or here at Amazon. It is a 4-volume unabridged set with some minor editing, some more current examples, and editorial clarifications.

This set is a bit more expensive than other audiobook approaches but you get the most exposure to the material for the money. Hard copies of this set are also available and are also strongly recommended.

For myself, I am about halfway through the third volume and the going is great. Already my mind and mentality is beginning to shift towards more success-consciousness. I feel better and my "success instincts" are beginning to sharpen. The content is a bit long-winded and archaic, but very solid and very well-thought out, what with 20 years of active research necessary to produce these insights. I heartily recommend it and it should not be passed over. I wish I had come across this 10 years ago.

OUTSTANDING for REAL WEALTH from the Inside Out that LASTS

This is one of the BEST books (there are two in the set) that I have ever read for what truly creates real and lasting wealth, as well as what prevents people from the same.

The wisdom in this book is timeless, and will definitely show you where you may have been unconsciously blocking abundance in your life, as well as the character beneath to sustain it with a pure conscious.

I could quote this book a thousand times. A few of my favorites are:

"Don't be afraid of a little opposition. Remember that the 'Kite' of success generally rises AGAINST the wind of Adversity - not with it!"

There is more in this book of lasting value that can truly make a difference in your life than many get-rich-quick books I've come across. As this great book states, "Conceit is a fog which envelops a man's real character beyond his own recognition. It weakens his native abilities and strengthens all his inconsistencies."

This book really shows you the stuff wealth is made of. It comes from a pure heart, an open mind that values wisdom, and a person who values people more than dollars. Do that, and you'll come to find more dollars than you ever have before.

Along with this book, I recommend "Think and Grow Rich" (shown above) and "Failing Forward" by John C. Maxwell if you're looking for more current examples, though timeless and rewarding.

The equalivent of an MBA in personal development

Like most people I bought Think & Grow Rich along with several other business and positive mind books. A leader in a company that I was associated with suggested The Law of Success. He warned me that it would be a lot of reading. At that time it was two hard back copies, beautifully bound.
I asked him if the books helped him. He told me that this set helped him achieve a level of success that was previously unattainable to him. And he told me that this series was much more complete than Think & Grow Rich---it was like attending class. Transcripts from actual Napolean Hill lectures.
I found that like Rich, these books helped me to go to levels that I could never reach before as well. Think & Grow Rich planted the seeds and got my interest as well as offered powerful strategies. This 2 book set helped make more sense of the principles, tied things together.
The other Hill book that I strongly recommend is Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. I know that even in todays world, some people bicker at the positive mind books...but guess what? They work! Everyone I know who has achieved any level of success attributes that success to books like these.
I know they sure have helped me.

The city is a bounded entity, grounded on a minutely divided and interrelated sacrilized space. It uses that space, roles assigned by an elaborate caste system, a semantically differentiated pantheon, and the tempos and forms of the festival year and rites of passage to construct a "civic dance," a web of communication and instruction which deeply affects the experience of Bhaktapur's citizens. Levy investigates the meaning of the community to the people who live there and suggests how the religious forms that have challenged Hinduism in South Asia—Christianity and, above all, Islam—are profoundly antithetical to Hinduism as the organizing principle for cities such as Bhaktapur. Mesocosm is a groundbreaking contribution to anthropology, social and religious history, and Indian and Nepalese studies.

A very academic approach to web programming

If you are familiar with the author's book (in its many editions) on programming languages, all I can say is that this is written in a similar style - thorough and very academic. There are code examples demonstrating what is being discussed, and there are summaries in each chapter as well as exercises and review questions, but you might be left wondering "what is the big picture here?". It by no means has the programming manual style of an O'Reilly book that often works through one big project - or several of them - as a way of teaching you internet programming principles. The good thing about this book is that the author has covered each subject very thoroughly. The bad thing is that you will need to read the book in short doses digesting each portion slowly as his style is quite academic and each page is densely packed with information. Since the last edition the author has added three chapters covering Ruby, Rails, and Ajax.

I would say this book is OK if you have a pretty good background in programming in C and C++ and already know something about web programming since there is only one preliminary chapter and it is rather vague. If you don't have such a background, let me recommend the various "Head First" books by O'Reilly and Associates on the subject as well as their other various books on web programming. You might wind up with more books and spend more money than if you buy this one, but I think your journey through the world of web programming will probably be more enjoyable and more comprehensible. Great overview, sparse on details.

This book has a great overview of many of the important aspects/languages required to make great web pages. I am currently using this book in a computer science class, and it has been very helpful. The only problem is that it doesn't give many specific examples. This can be overcome though through sites like [...] and [...]

fast-paced, effective overview of multiple web technologies

If you don't have a clue regarding web markup or scripting languages, as in "none", then don't get this book. You won't be able to follow. However, if you have at least written some basic scripts/markup, get ready to do some work (it will be work), and learn tons from this guy.
It's packed with information; a concise summary of nuts and bolts of multiple technologies that go into making a dynamic website.

It's brevity was part of it's challenge for me, and I think for others as well. One user gave 2 stars for "gaps in explanations" but, I strongly disagree with this poor rating. The Preface reads ".. this book is aimed at college students, not necessarily computer science majors, but anyone who has taken at least two courses in programming ... also useful for professional programmers who wish to learn Web programming ... the goal of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the programming tools and skills required to build and maintain server sites on the web." I'm keeping it as a reference because the author has done such an exceptional job of covering the rudiments of entire technologies in single chapters.

If you have never even touched Javascript, or PHP, or at least some programming/scripting language, then then this book will be too much work. This book is not an intro to HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, AJAX etc.. It is a densely-packed overview of multiples of them, with the understanding that you already know how to do basic programming/scripting.
