good introduction to disruptive technologies

This book is a good introduction to some of the disruptive technologies for those readers that have not spent time staying current on the progress of driverless cars, artificial general intelligence, smartphone technology, etc. For those readers that are current on these issues there will not be many "oh, wow!" moments in this read. Yes, everyday things have computers built in and those are now being given the ability to communicate to the internet and each other. With the exception of autos and medical monitors, many of these will be as insignificant as my kitchen oven having a digital control on it, I just don't care! I just need to be able to turn it on to 350 degrees and bake my brownies, no timers needed, no auto shutoff, just let me turn it on and off, job done!
A lot of this stuff is already quite visible to the general public anyway, just watch the ads on TV for home security systems as an example. People are more aware of rapid tech changes coming at them than they were in the 90's when the PC and the internet first appeared.
The book is well written, researched and easy to read and for this I do recommend it for anyone wanting to begin understanding some of the changes headed our way, however they will need to connect to many additional resources in addition to this book in order to have a more comprehensive and current understanding (kurzweilai.net is good source, it has current tech articles, including M2M, and it's free!)

Excellent Vision of the Universe of IoT

Even though I have been involved in the M2M technology world for the last few years, I have found The Silent Intelligence to provide me with some new insights. I think the authors did a great job in connecting all the pieces of this complex ecosystem, how it is applied to various vertical markets such as automotive, manufacturing and healthcare, in a compelling, yet easy to comprehend way that anyone can understand. I was especially pleased to see them tackle the topic of the enormous amounts of constantly increasing amounts of data that the IoT world generates and how to make sense of it all. I also appreciate their frank appraisal of some of the issues we still face in the M2M world, such as fragmentation and data sharing.

The writing itself is engaging and easy to understand, while very informative. I also enjoyed the way they weaved quotes from industry experts to validate their points.

I for one am looking forward to the day when my car drives me autonomously to my office, while my house knows to reduce energy consumption while I'm away and start the dishwasher later in the day, and my watch reminds me it's time to have a solid, carb-full lunch because I'm scheduled for that 30 mile bike ride later in the afternoon! Thank you to both authors for painting that picture of the possibilities with this book.

Makes you think of the possibilities

The "two Daniels" have painted a good snapshot of the state of an industry that is finally starting to get some traction in mainstream applications. The idea of millions or billions of "things" reporting their status automatically via wireless means in ways that allow centralized or distributed analysis and, eventually, response and control actions is just becoming a reality. This book paints a good broad picture of how this (r)evolution may come about and the markets and technology forces that will come together to make this happen. The book reads like a kind of market research report, but without the multitudinous data tables and graphs that are typically found in those kinds of report. Based on a large variety of interviews conducted by the authors, they present an assortment of perspectives on this nascent market provided by a number of industry leaders who have watched the conception and birth of this next phase of interneting. The challenge to any book like this is that technology, markets and economies are moving so fast that the industry status changes very quickly and, thus, any snapshot is rapidly obsolete. Thus, the book does not go into depth about the specific technology challenges or economic drivers as these issues are very fluid and dynamic. The bottom line presented by the authors is that the new "internet of things" is happening now and that major markets are primed for embracing the benefits and values that this new capability provides.

One of my favorite reads of the year!

First Impression: Well-written, the character of Megan pulled me right into the story and I loved getting to know her and seeing the college world through her eyes.

I've not had the pleasure of reading anything by Rhonda Helms before so I had no preconceived notions in reading Break Your Heart, but I have to say, I fell in love with this book and its characters. The writing was easy and interesting to read, the story and situations were engaging and realistic to the time and setting and the characters involved, and the heroine, Megan, is easy to like and relate to, whether that be her inner feelings about Nick, her life at college, or the experiences she's gone through in the past and going through now in the present.

In this book, we've got a professor/student theme going on and I have to admit, I do love reading books featuring this particular theme. It's that whole forbidden love aspect thing I think, which is another one of my all time favorite themes to read because of the conflict and struggle the characters go through during the story. That same conflict and struggle was present in this book, and it was there the moment college senior Megan Porter meets Professor Nick Muramoto, who has taken over teaching her cryptology class and who also happens to be her newly assigned thesis advisor.

From the start, there was a sense of inevitability to Megan and Nick's meeting, and I loved the author's writing and storytelling ability so much, I was actually anxious for Megan and Nick to make that first step toward crossing the line. There was such good emotional buildup to that moment, and Megan is one of those characters you can't help but like and want to root for, even as you know she's headed for a hard, fast fall.

One thing I absolutely loved and adored about Megan is how observant she is of the people around her, her friends most of all. She sees them, in ways other people around them may not get, and that makes her a special kind of person to me. It also makes it more troubling to realize that while she can see other people and their lives, she might not see her own life and her own choices all that clear, and she has a habit of judging things or analyzing things without knowing the truth of them. All those differences in her character fascinated me, and made her interactions with Nick all the more nerve wracking and intense.

I liked these characters together. I liked how they got to know one another, despite them both knowing nothing should occur between them. This was a fantastic story. One I highly recommend reading, especially if, like me, you love New Adult romance and crave stories of forbidden love and unquenchable longing.

"Break Your Heart" by Rhonda Helms

What I liked about this novel....

I found this novel of "Break Your Heart was a sweet New Adult read dealing with a 'African American heroine and a Asian American hero that turned out to be a sweet read especially for the New Adult readers. The story line was right on point all the way from the beginning of the read to the end. This story of if Megan [student]and Nick[professor] who become involved. The characters were all well developed, defined, well portrayed and yes...believable that help to keep this read right on chart. It was very interesting to see how this student was going to handle all that was put in front of her and even so with that 'professor.' The author even worked other problems into this read that will keep the reader turning the pages to see what will happen next. So, from a infatuation with a professor to life with family [mom issues]...we are given a read that with imply some secrets that will come out. Will this heroine be able to handle it all? Will Megan be able to 'silence the noise around her and listen to what her heart is telling her? And omg that hero Nick was simply off the chart...loved that 'Terminal Tower scene.' This is where I will say you will have to pick up this read to find out will Megan and Nick be able to make it and get what they want in the end.

A good teacher-student romance

More like a 3.5.

I'm a fan of student-teacher stories, so I was really looking forward to this one. I especially liked the fact that it was taking place in college with people way over the age of consent, and with a young professor whose attempting to qualify for tenure. Lots of angst and potential conflict there.

I liked the characters, especially Megan, very much. I loved how motivated she was. She knows what she wants out of life and she's going for it very carefully. The introduction of Dr. Nick Muramoto is something of an unexpected surprise, and she's not sure where her attraction and feelings for him come from. I liked Nick, but I couldn't help but wish I had gotten to know him just a little bit better.

I thought there was some good sexual tension between these two , but I might have waited just a bit longer for it to develop, let them fight it a bit longer before finally giving in. I wanted to feel more of that build-up, and I definitely wished the author had stretched out the angst an danger of discovery aspect just a little longer. I wanted to bite my nails a bit longer, be worried just a bit more, before the inevitable happened....because you know it's going to.

I did, however, love how the author handled it from there. It was a different ending than I've come to expect, so kudos to the author for originality here. The story was good, pretty fast-paced, and my favorite aspect was the female lead, Megan. I loved her strong, motivated character. A good story.

it would have been nice if both Jill and the silk were more contrasting ...

It's very expensive for a book printed in black and white. Also, it would have been nice if both Jill and the silk were more contrasting in color, because sometimes it is difficult to tell exactly what is going on. I really appreciate her youtube videos, and I feel like the cost of this is, in a way, going towards those. She is very talented and very good at explaining a lot of difficult moves. I can't decide if this book is a three or a four star resource, but I am glad she authored it and put it out there.

This book is nothing if not thorough. It has very clear, step-by-step descriptions of tricks, which, if you're anything like me and forget the next step when you're upside down in the air, this is very helpful to review at home, and easier and more comprehensive than hunting down youtube videos of various tricks you're working on. This is also a tremendous guide if you have time where you practice on your own. It's very detailed and the pictures are so specific and helpful. If you're slipping in a hip key because of fabric placement you can look at the picture and know how to correct it. It also covers terminology, muscles, and so much more! This is a great tool and I love my new copy! I was amazed out how much information the book contained

I came across Jill Franklin's first book, 'Beginner's Guide to Aerial Silk', about six months ago and WOW!!! I was amazed out how much information the book contained. In just a few short weeks as I continued practicing the techniques from Jill's book, I couldn't believe how much more noticeable my upper body strength improved and I was much more flexible.
I also follow Jill on her YouTube channel, where she demonstrates many of her movements and I learned she was wrapping up production of her second book. I just searched Amazon and Jill's second book is now available.
I look forward to ordering a copy and can't wait to expand my knowledge of Aerial Silk. YOU'RE AN AWESOME MOTIVATOR AND A GREAT COACH. Gary P. Salt Lake City Utah.

The second section examines some of the tools that can be used, and have been used, to prevent the escalation of dynamics towards the commission of atrocity crimes (tools such as sanctions, mediation, international criminal justice, and the use of military means), as well as the operational challenges that tend to obstruct global efforts to prevent such crimes. The third and final section draws lessons from actual cases of preventive action, both historical and recent, about the relative success of particular tools and approaches.

As the first edited collection of its kind, devoted exclusively to the preventive dimension of R2P, The Responsibility to Prevent intends to inform and shape the growing debate on how to approach atrocity crime prevention and how to build the capacities needed to implement the imperatives at the heart of R2P.

About the Author

Dr Serena Sharma is a Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department at King's College. Prior to joining King's Serena was based at the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict (ELAC) in Oxford University's Department of International Relations. She also held a Lectureship in International Relations at the Queen's College and a Research Fellowship at Wolfson College, Oxford. In 2010 Serena was appointed as the United Nations Association (UK) Special Advisor on the Responsibility to Protect. She holds a PhD in International Relations and a Masters in Human Rights from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). She has served as an editor and associate editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies. Prior to commencing her graduate studies, Serena worked with the former Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy.

Jennifer Welsh is Professor and Chair in International Relations at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) and a Senior Research Fellow at Somerville College, Oxford. She is co-director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict. In July 2013, Professor Welsh was named by UN Secretary Ban ki-moon as his Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect. Professor Welsh is the author and editor of several books and articles on the responsibility to protect, humanitarian intervention, the UN Security Council, and the principle of sovereignty. She sits on the editorial boards of the journals Ethics and International Affairs and Global Responsibility to Protect, and the Cambridge University Press series in International Relations. From 2014, she will be directing a 5-year research project, funded by the European Research Council, on the 'individualization of war'.

The Definite COM & CORBA Guide

Not only did "COM & CORBA Side by Side" did an excellent job of comparing COM & CORBA, it laid out a number of strategies to apply *both* technologies' strengths in designing and implementing your distributed system solutions. As Part 1 of the book is aptly titled, the book's overriding theme is embracing COM & CORBA to your advantage. Evolutionary background and current technology trends in distributed computing were covered thoroughly. Development issues on both client & server sides were given enough treatment to satisfy 2 groups of audience: developers who want to understand the implementation details & differences of COM & CORBA, and decision makers who need strategic information on the technology's main players and future directions.
However, the key to the entire book is Part 4 that covers COM & CORBA bridging strategies ranging from custom approaches (C++, JVM) to third-party commercial products (Visual Edge's ObjectBridge) to enterprise application servers that provide support for client & server components implemented with both COM & CORBA. This is probably the only COM & CORBA book currently available that provides comprehensive information on this topic. My only complaint is that only one commercial bridging product was covered in this section. I wish the author had spent more time on other third-party bridging solutions. Well, maybe that can be covered in a second edition.
The book is also logically laid out with executive summary before and after each chapter and major section. What I also like about the book's presentation is the example code are higlighted with light gray background, making it easy to distinguish between text & programming details. In all, it is refreshing to come across a book that promotes building solutions by harnessing the strengths of competing technologies and does a very good job at that with real code & examples.

A great book to keep for distributed computing

This is an amazing book which covers such a diverse field in distributed computing. This field is often confusing and sometimes even intimidating with many emerging technologies involving many programming languages and different platforms. Dr. Pritchard did an excellent job to bring much needed clarity in his book.
The book has a very good organization and it is very easy to follow. It starts with a brief discussion on the history and background of distributed objects with some fundamental concepts. It then presents a comprehensive and objective comparison of COM and COBRA on both server and client sides. The book is completed with the presentation of bridging techniques between COM and COBRA, enabling the two to interoperate and coexist in an enterprise system. Dr. Prichard apparently has applied both COM and COBRA in practical projects, and therefore he is able to share his past experiences in using these technologies. He offers many technical insights in the planning and assessment, design and architecture, as well as implementation details with code examples in C++, Java and VB. I enjoyed reading his strategy discussions the most. There are too many books on the market which are filled with codes and technical details. This is a rare book which puts an equal emphasis on planning and design strategies.
This book covers a variety of topics such as: MTS, MSMQ, ADO, ASP, OTS, JavaBeans and Enterprise JavaBeans, just mentioning a few. Dr. Pritchard presents these topics in a concise yet clear fashion. I am truly amazed that he could present all these topics with such a clarity, illustrating his deep understanding on the subject. It is certainly a book to keep for anyone who is working on or planning an enterprise distributed object system with either COM or COBRA.

Great information that should be taught in school

This book is a must read for those that are interested in great health. If you read this book you are going to clean your septic system. One thing you will come away with is the knowledge that you can't keep treating symptoms and expect to get better. Doctors usally treat symptoms. Your septic system is the root of most of your problems. Clean it on a regular basis and your body will heal itself. The body wants to heal itself and does an amazinly good job of it. But if it is overcome by poisons it can't heal itself. 5 stars!

This book confirmed everthing my naturopath told me about how we begin to heal at the bottom upward. He had been ill as a very young man in life and met someone who understood cleansing as well as other natural foods for wellness. Harry recognizes the corpse as that of a fellow soldier in Vietnam; both were "tunnel rats" who searched for Viet Cong in the network of burrows beneath Vietnamese villages. Investigation connects his old pal to an unsolved bank job--the vault was tunneled into from the storm drains below--and Harry takes his information to the FBI. The Bureau alerts the LAPD, which reactivates internal affairs surveillance (the previous IAD episode is explained throughout the narrative), only to have the FBI backtrack and request Harry as liaison on the case. Paired with beautiful FBI agent Eleanor Wish, Harry makes sense of the Vietnam connection to the bank job--a discovery that puts them both in danger from deadly ex-Marines and a powerful insider from either the LAPD or the FBI itself. Police higher-ups are somewhat cliched, but Connelly avoids L.A. stereotypes and delivers this front-page story with military precision.

Connelly's descriptions of autopsies, murder scenes, and police procedure are vivid and realistic. The use of acronyms and police jargon puts readers in the middle of the action. A real page turner with gutty realism and an unusual twist.

A Gripping Yarn

This was Michael Connelly's first novel (of 6 to date) featuring LAPD detective Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch. Matters begin innocuously enough when Bosch discovers that a dead body found in a drainage pipe is a one-time Vietnam comrade of his named William Meadows. It appears to be a simple drug overdose, but Bosch suspects foul play, and when he determines he is right, he is plunged into an investigation that develops into far more than a single murder case.
The "iceberg" plot where a complex scheme is only gradually exposed is a crime fiction standard. Connelly is, even in his first novel, a master at this type of plot-line. His characters are three-dimensional and interesting, especially Bosch and his uneasy ally, FBI agent Eleanor Wish. Best of all, Connelly knows his territory--a former Los Angeles Times reporter, he knows LA and the LAPD (I suspect he still has sources in the department). The Black Echo is a superb novel.

AWESOME POLICE PROCEDURAL, CONNELLY IS THE NEW MASTER

The first book I read by Mr. Connelly was his departure from the Bosch series, "The Poet" and I knew I had to read the rest. I have read every single other Bosch novel and finally went back to the beginning and read this. I should have started with this one, its just as good if not better than the series and Bosch is a fully-fleshed out character who you can always cheer for. This book is also interesting because of its attention to detail and the police procedure as well as the first meeting of Harry and Agent Eleanor Wish, his mysterious future love. Connelly has become my favorite author and his books are a pleasure to read. Just make sure you start with this one and work your way down, it does make a difference!

An absolutely terrific first novel in the superb Hironymous Bosch series, introduces us to Michael Connelly's enigmatic and troubled LA detective. Harry Bosch lives for his job, and the cost to his personal life and relationships is troubling.

When we meet Harry, he has already been, in essence, demoted by being kicked off of the elite Robbery/Homicide squad and stuck in Homicide in the Hollywood division. But Harry is a pure detective, and will work every case with the same single-minded tenacity that gets results while alienating him from his fellows and irritating his bosses.

A throw-away death of a junkie found in a drainage pipe would have gone unnoticed if anyone but Harry Bosch had caught the call. But Bosch, while having a lousy personal life IS a superb detective, and he sees what many would miss. Not only that, but the victim is someone from Harry's past which further prompts him to look deeper. Harry's investigation causes him to cross paths with the FBI and his conflicts become even more personal when he becomes romantically involved with a female FBI agent.

The story unfolds with many surprises and the meticulous detail that we will come to expect from Connelly in the series. First rate all the way. A great beginning.
