The title's a bit misleading--it's not about cardiac care and it's not about calculus, but rather how 30 years of research have shown that the heart's "intelligence" affects emotions and physical health--especially when it comes to handling stress--and specifically what you can do to balance heart rhythms, reduce stress hormones, and boost your immune system. Yes, it sounds complicated, especially when you read that cardiologists worked with physicists and psychiatrists to develop the HeartMath program. But it's worth brushing off your skepticism and exploring the concepts in the Solution, as many employees of Fortune 500 companies have already done.

The "intelligence" that the authors focus on refers to both the heart's "brain," or the 40,000 neurons found in the heart (the same number in the brain itself), and the intuitive signals the heart sends, including feelings of love, happiness, care, and appreciation. When such positive emotions are felt, they "not only change patterns of activity in the nervous system; they also reduce the production of the stress hormone cortisol." When there's less cortisol, there's more DHEA, the so-called fountain of youth hormone known to have anti-aging effects on many of the body's systems.

The HeartMath Solution outlines 10 steps for harnessing the power of the heart's intelligence, including ways to manage your emotions and keep energy levels high. One of the most important is the "Freeze-Frame" technique for calming the nervous system, improving clarity of thought and perception, and boosting productivity (which is one of the many appealing features for those Fortune 500 companies). Heartmath--An amazing book, for the open-minded

I would not have believed this, anything that's supposedly going to help so many ways usually just helps the seller make money. But I found a lot of documentation for what this man says.

I can't begin to give enough information about the benefits of these books and the emawave 2, the model I have.

I can watch my heart beat, like an EEG, on my computer screen. It shows the degree of coherence between the heart and the brain. It's similar to biofeedback, but much more. The more compliance, the better then brain functions. The best analogy is a 3 legged race. If you work in synchronization, you can do it. If not, you'll never be your best.

I can take the little gadget with me anywhere. I just put my thumb on it. The color of the light lets me know my level of coherence.

There are many activities that are fun, as well as the basic monitors. It will keep records on your computer, if you use the computer program.

Don't freak about the price. Watch for used ones. My emwave 2 is perfect and was less than $100 (on Amazon). Even at full price, what would it cost to buy a biofeedback machine that's better than a mood ring?

Dr. Oz used one on his show. He didn't say anything about it, but I saw it in his hand as he explained what he was doing.

With this much evidence, I ordered the book. wow. Now I think I have all the books and booklets by this author. I have learned so much about myself by looking outside the "western medicine" box.

It fits congruently with many other beliefs about mind and body, and not what you read from the AMA. The AMA doesn't make money from healthy people. Some alternative ideas help you get and stay healthier, both medically and emotionally. The authors make money selling books that will help you. You just need an open mind. .

Check things out, don't just do/swallow everything someone recommends.

I'm often a skeptic--but this passed all my "tests".

I have so many new insights from his writing.

Having read and researched his books I recommend them 100%.

Yes it deserves five stars. No that doesn't mean it's perfect. Perhaps in an attempt to establish credibility, much of the first sixty pages are spent with shallow self-serving praise. Since I purchased Heartmath Solution based on the very high recommendations of several independent expers I'd met, and the recommendation in the film, "I Am," answering the the question, "who is responsible for suffering and problems of Earth," I already respected Heartmath and found those first sixty or so pages tiresome. Stay with the read. Don't be turned off by the puffing in the early chapter(s). Once you get to the "Freeze Frame" technique, somewhere past page 50 or 60, you're into the gold. You'll be glad you did.

HeartMath Solution is a tool that offered immense help for me in breaking some specific toxic neural pathways that I more or less suffered from most of my life. If one will take time read and to utilize the exercises it offers, one cannot but be helped, in my opinion. This was, however, only a beginning in breaking down negative responses to certain triggers in my mind and emotions. Following this, I was lead by the Lord Jesus' Spirit to Faster EFT with Robert Smith and Bruce Lipton's "Biology of Belief" both on youTube. After that more breakthroughs came when I heard a DVD "Toxic Thinking" by Doctor Caroline Leaf, author of the books: "Who Switched Off My Brain." and "Who Switched On My Brain".
All these sources I've referred to make it very clear that "RIGHT THINKING (BELIEVING) PRODUCES RIGHT LIVING". It is an exciting field especially when you throw in the subject of Quantum physics which serves as a foundation and integral part of the message these people
share.

Highly enjoyable. Very sharp, and very funny.

The first thing to understand about this book is that it's not really conducive to long periods of reading. As every fan knows, brevity is not Hitch's strong suit - in fact, a large part of the joy one gets from reading his works comes from his thorough explanations and fascinating side-notes. After becoming familiar with his writing style, it's almost unnerving to try and read this book for long periods of time. It starts to feel terse and manic. It's not because the quotes aren't worthwhile; each one is a classic gem, worthy of its reprinting here. But before long, the overload of short, brilliant quotes feels disjointed. It perfectly captures Mr. Hitchens' wit, but by implication can't include his level of depth or substance.

With that in mind, this book works perfectly in short bursts. And its alphabetical indexing perfectly divides it into 26 neat sections. I recommend reading one section a day. It feels like just the right amount. And of course, this makes an incredibly useful desk reference. If you ever need a sharp, intellectual quote to open a research paper or argument, this will become your favorite source. I've already used it twice in this way. It's easy to start on a high note when you can quickly find a quote on almost any topic you can think of, from one of the sharpest writers of the modern era.

One of the things that surprised me about this book is the extremely broad use of his quotes, in regards to both subject matter and time. The sections on "god", "Iraq War", and "Smoking" are shorter than you may expect, and there are dozens of topics you wouldn't expect, like "Patterns", "Euphemisms", and "Tennis". And the quotes themselves are evenly spread over his entire career. I expected it to rely primarily on his more widely known post-9/11 works, but this is not the case. Quite a bit of the material comes from interviews and columns from several decades ago. This is a great thing for devoted fans, as so much of it feels completely new. I own all of Hitch's books, and I was happily surprised to see so many quotes I'd never seen before.

Martin Amis' charming foreword alone is worth the price of the book, and at less than $10, you can't go wrong. It makes a great reference by itself, and if you're even mildly interested in Christopher Hitchens, you'll be happy to have this!

Gem after gem after gem.

It is the mark of a truly superlative aphorist--which Hitchens, along with being our age's consummate rhetorician, clearly is--that one finds oneself laughing at or being impressed by a quote with which one in no way agrees.

"Quotable Hitchens" is a master class in how to express strong opinions in ways that cannot be forgotten.

While there are topics covered in the book that not only do I not care much about, but know even less about, each quotation gives some special insight into this strange contrarian's brilliant mind, and for me at least, holds up ideas to be examined in different lights.

I find it impossible to write about Hitchens without lionizing him, even though I think he can be terribly mistaken about things. It's because he's like an uncle I would have wanted as a teen--able to spit in convention's eye with such deadly accuracy that it wins the admiration of even the spit-upon, and so adept with a turn of phrase that even his most erudite opposition (think Hitchens vs. Blair: Be It Resolved Religion Is a Force for Good in the World (The Munk Debates)) can be rocked back on its heels.

This book preserves some of the sharpest lines Hitchens has spoken or written, and taken as a whole, they help explain why Hitchens says he's never so happy as when he's hunched over a book or typewriter. For him, language is the ultimate playground.

Keep it up, Hitch!

Approved by the author; chosen & edited by another; this still does the trick of introducing newcomers (are there any intelligent readers out there who haven't read Christoher Hitchens?) to our greatest prose stylist since George Orwell. For the others of us who are, as they say down the road in Hollywood, huge fans,they'll find a stocking stuffer, a little treat, a jeu d'esprit in this new release. Taken in the aggregate, quotes from his many books, numerous articles, & constant interviews -- this is a stunning reminder of the amazing body of work banged out on two fingers on a certain little typewriter. This machine, along with its owner, has been all over the world, commenting on more political situations than would be thought possible. Never at a loss for words, or rather for the words, his prose is elegant, funny, honest. If you like books of quotations as I do, this is a fun one. Hitchens on a range of subjects, rather eccentrically chosen but still covers the map -- though more on Bill Clinton than on Women (unfair, I wanted to hear what he thinks), nothing on Marriage, or Oxford, (C.H. is a famous son of Balliol College) the writing process, or a few more wished-for topics. Never mind, there'll be another one...

Hoping that Mr. Hitchens is recovering from his health problems, and resting (at least on his laurels) and can come back to my small town of Claremont in big L.A. to visit our local college. Hearing him speak last year was a most acute pleasure - who would know English could sound so beautiful & just?

Wonderful artwork in companion tome

I remember falling in love with the first "Trumpets" book when I was a kid. I found it on one of my many visits to the local library, and I was even more thrilled to find it on sale (cheap) at a local Kmart at one point. I never found Trumpets in Grumpetland for sale anywhere, but I did also find it at the library. While the story is nothing special, as with the first book, the artwork really shines. The world of the Trumpets and Grumpets is still vivid and detailed.

I waited until I found a reasonable price for this item (around $40) and I was happy to finally acquire it recently to complete the collection. I would not spend the $100+ asked for by some sellers, but that's up to you.

I highly recommend this book

This is a delightful British book by Peter Cross. It is full of intriguing artwork, with pictures within pictures, drawings of items in odd places, yet faithful to the story of adventure between the peace-loving Trumpets and the war-like Grumpets. Exciting events unfold as the story progresses, culminating in a Grumpicat war, with the evil Grumpet leader, Havoc, fighting against the Trumpets. Stimulates a child's imagination in a unique and artful way. I highly recommend this book. All 6 of my children asked for their own copy. (Sadly out of print, so somewhat difficult to find...)

Eyes Wide Opened

I am not a creative person. I want to be. I think like most people I want to create something. I want to write something. Create something. While searching for something new in the books section of Amazon.com I hit on this title. I knew nothing about Austin Kleon. I am not a poetry fan so I did not know about the Newspaper Blackout book. I actually judged this book by it's cover (and the description to be honest). I read it in an hour (you can too - it is a short book). Then I read it again much more slowly and with a highlighter. Most of what he writes about may be trite to those "in the know" but for me this book said I could go into the world, find something I love and tweak it bit to make it mine. And in doing that I could show the creator that his work inspired me to create something. This book also told me that I already possessed the tools to be creative. Since I know that I like Kleon suggest that I study why I like it. Find out what makes it work for me and then use that as a jumping off point. But even these words do not convey accurately enough how inspired I was - I read it again - I added his blog and tumblr feeds to my daily readings - I follow him on twitter and bought some books he recommended. Finally - rather than sending him an email telling him how wonderful this book is - I am following his advice and putting those same thoughts in a review. A small book awakened a bit of passion for being creative. Not a small feat. A small book but a big heart. Hope all these words add up to this - I love this book.

Get out there and get busy creating.

If you've been paying attention to certain parts of the Web recently, you may be familiar with a rising chorus of voices talking about creativity as "remixing." The broad thesis is that creativity isn't a mystical flash of insight in the mind of a lone genius, but rather a combinatorial, collaborative process in which artists and designers consciously and gradually combine existing ideas into novel forms. Books like "The Gift", by Lewis Hyde, and video series like "Everything is a Remix", by Kirby Ferguson, champion this burgeoning idea (and are name-checked by Kleon at the end of "Artist"). But if Hyde and Ferguson are the theorists charting the contours of these new ideas, Kleon is the practitioner, the man-of-artistic-action, bringing the means and the message to the people.

"Steal Like An Artist" began as a lecture given by Kleon at Broome Community College that later emerged as a viral blog post. Kleon makes no effort to hide the fact that the blog post forms the skeleton of "Artist". But even if you've memorized the post, Kleon layers enough muscle and flesh on it that you feel like you're encountering his core ideas all over again. The same rush of discovery and energy awaits.

Kleon describes himself as "a writer that draws," and "Artist" is proof of that. He designed the book himself and his voice and style shine through. "Artist" feels unified, innovative, balanced, and, above all, intimate. The book is small, like a big cocktail napkin. It's full of illustrations by Kleon and little flourishes that keep things brisk as you read. The small size makes the book feel approachable, ready to provide a quick inspiration burst if need be. Kleon describes ten basic principles to boost your creativity. He lists them on the back cover of the book (a choice that Kindle purchasers will miss) so that they're easily referenced. It's a small touch, but emblematic of the book's careful construction.

Most importantly, "Artist" is focused on practicality. Kleon has absorbed the lessons of Hyde and Ferguson, but he wants to do more than evangelize; he wants to transform. "Artist" is stuffed with practical tips that you can adopt. In fact, there's a section at the very end of the book titled "What Now?", in which Kleon gives you a long, itemized list of things you can do *right now* to prime your creative pump.

One recent book that Kleon doesn't reference is "Where Good Ideas Come From", by Steve Johnson. "Good Ideas" is one of the best new books about spurring creativity, but it's primarily focused on principles of creativity and their historical origins. "Artist" is a perfect companion to "Good Ideas". Once you've read Johnson's book and your head is full of theory, Kleon's book comes along and gives you a good, firm (and lighthearted) kick in the pants to send you on your way. You certainly don't need to read "Good Ideas" or any other book to receive the full benefit of "Artist". It's a short, heady blast of exuberance that's guaranteed to kick-start your imagination.

Creativity to a Deeper Level

After reading Dr. Andy's book Creativity, 63 short exercises to a Happier Life (a great book with good exercises by the way), I decided I wanted to get into the topic of creativity to a deeper level. So I picked up this book and I am glad I did.

What Kleon does in this book is take a lot of the mystique out of creativity and show how you can use the idea of mixing what others have done to come up with great ides that take the concepts to a new level not before envisioned.

The book is full of information about how to work with your own creative instincts and bring forward excellent new ideas even if your skills have been dormant for a long time or you have been caught in in a dead end job that does not seem to give an outlet for your finer instincts.

This book is well on the way to becoming a classic in the field, and with good reason, I highly recommend it!
