Feeding Frenzy: Land Grabs, Price Spikes, and the World Food Crisis, by Paul McMahon

Feeding Frenzy traces the history of the global food system and reveals the underlying causes of recent turmoil in food markets. Supplies are running short, prices keep spiking, and the media is full of talk of a world food crisis. The turmoil has unleashed some dangerous forces. Food-producing countries are banning exports even if this means starving their neighbors. Governments and corporations are scrambling to secure control of food supply chains. Powerful groups from the Middle East and Asia are acquiring farmland in poor countries to grow food for export — what some call land grabs. This raises some big questions. Can we continue to feed a burgeoning population? Are we running out of land and water? Can we rely on free markets to provide? This book reveals trends that could lead to more hunger and conflict. But Paul McMahon also outlines actions that can be taken to shape a sustainable and just food system.

A gleaming steel fence is going up in a remote part of Africa.
An alien construction, it dissects a landscape of open fields,
mud huts and dirt tracks, where straight lines are elusive. On
one side, diesel-powered tractors chew up the soil, containers
packed with seed and fertiliser wait to be opened, and foreign
managers look forward to a bumper harvest. On the other
side, a local farmer in a tattered shirt scratches at the soil with
a simple hoe, fearing that he may not be able to grow enough
food for his family. Villagers cluster around the gate to the
property, looking for work but muttering that the land rightly
belongs to them. There are rumours that the young men are
arming themselves so they can resist what they regard as a
foreign ‘land grab’.

This story is playing out on the western fringes of Ethiopia,
in a steamy region close to the border with South Sudan. The
land has been acquired by a billionaire sheikh as part of an
initiative launched by the Saudi government, which wants to
grow more of its food abroad. Ethiopia, like most of Africa,
may be better known for food scarcity and famine, rather
than food abundance and exports, but this is one of dozens
of similar projects to be launched across the continent since
2008.

The appearance of steel fences and satellite-guided tractors
in one of the poorest parts of the world is a direct result of the
turmoil that has gripped global food markets over the past five
years. Food prices more than doubled between 2007 and 2008.
Grain stocks fell to a dangerous level, and there were fears that
supplies would not be available at any price. After a brief dip,
prices rebounded in 2010 and jumped again in 2012. Food is a lot
more expensive than a decade ago and does not look like getting
any cheaper. We seem to be stuck in a never-ending food crisis.
Everyone can see the effect in their supermarket and
restaurant bills. Higher food prices squeeze our incomes,
meaning there is less to spend on everything else. But for the
poor of the world the impacts are more dramatic. About one
in eight people now go hungry each year. Millions of people
have been forced deeper into poverty. High prices have sparked
food riots and demonstrations in more than thirty countries.
In January 2011 an iconic photograph emerged of a protester
in Tunisia facing down riot police armed with nothing more
than a baguette – a symbol of how anger over food helped
spark the ‘Arab Spring’.

Ferment in food markets has been seized upon by professional
doom-mongers who believe the human race is living
beyond its means. ‘The Coming Famine’, ‘World on the Edge’,
‘Climate Change Peril’, ‘Peak Food’, ‘Peak Oil’, even ‘Peak Dirt’
– these are some of the ideas and book titles that have circulated
in recent years, all warning of an impending food collapse.
Malthus, the nineteenth-century prophet of population catastrophe,
is back in fashion. And another controversial idea is
re-emerging after a long period of stigmatisation – population
control. Rich people in rich countries are once more telling
poor people in poor countries to have fewer children.

There is no doubt that we are entering a challenging
time. The human population will grow from 7 to 9 billion
over the next forty years. Every year there are an extra 80
million mouths to feed. As the global middle class swells in
size, people are demanding more expensive diets, which adds
to the pressure on the planet’s resources. There is a question
mark over the sustainability of modern agriculture because
of its dependence on fossil fuels, the damage it inflicts on
the environment and its vulnerability to a changing climate.
Even the UK government’s chief scientist, Professor Sir John
Beddington, has warned that ‘the food system is failing’.
Can we feed a world of 9 billion by 2050? Is the current
market turmoil an early sign that the global food system will
not cope?

This book tries to answer these questions. It describes how
the global food system works today, highlighting the huge
inequalities and imbalances that pervade it. It reveals the real
reasons behind the recent increase in food prices, exploring
issues such as the role of biofuels, climate change, financial
speculation and the rise of the Asian consumer. It looks at how
demand for food is likely to develop over the next forty years
and investigates whether food supplies will be able to keep up.

At the most basic level, this means assessing the biophysical
potential of our planet – the amount of land, water, energy
and other natural resources that is available. It is a matter of
hard science. But just because we can produce enough food
does not mean that everyone will eat. Food security is determined
not only by how much food is available but by whether
people can access it and afford it. Therefore, the real answer will
depend on the social, economic and political dimensions of the
global food system. In particular the fate of millions of people
will be determined by whether nations choose to compete or
collaborate in a time of relative scarcity.

Judging by the response to the recent crisis, we are in for
a period of intense competition. This book lifts the lid on
the extraordinary scramble for food that is now taking place
around the world. It reveals how countries are manipulating
trade and hoarding agricultural surpluses, even if this starves
their neighbours; how financial investors are distorting markets
through their willingness to bet on anything; how private
corporations are rushing to secure supply chains before their
competitors can get there; and how a bizarre array of fortunehunters
and policymakers are scrambling to acquire farmland
in some of the poorest countries of the world, in ways that
echo the colonialism of the past. Many people no longer trust
markets to provide. Food has become a geopolitical issue of the
highest importance.

If these trends continue, they could lead to a nightmare
scenario of exploitation, hunger and conflict. But this book
also maps out an alternative vision that could deliver better
outcomes. It is a way forward that addresses the heated debates
that often flare up in connection with the future of food and
farming. It overcomes simple dichotomies such as organics
versus genetic engineering, family farms versus large commercial
estates, free trade versus government subsidies. It builds
on the work of innovators all around the world who have
found ways to produce more food with fewer resources while
generating wealth for farmers and consumers. Which path will
the world choose? The answer will matter to politicians and
generals, to farmers and investors, to consumers and citizens –
and, not least, to the African farmers watching the steel fences
go up around their land.

The Land of Open Graves: Living and Dying on the Migrant Trail (California Series in Public Anthropology), by Jason De Leon

In his gripping and provocative debut, anthropologist Jason De León sheds light on one of the most pressing political issues of our time—the human consequences of US immigration policy.  The Land of Open Graves reveals the suffering and deaths that occur daily in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona as thousands of undocumented migrants attempt to cross the border from Mexico into the United States.

Drawing on the four major fields of anthropology, De León uses an innovative combination of ethnography, archaeology, linguistics, and forensic science to produce a scathing critique of “Prevention through Deterrence,” the federal border enforcement policy that encourages migrants to cross in areas characterized by extreme environmental conditions and high risk of death. For two decades, this policy has failed to deter border crossers while successfully turning the rugged terrain of southern Arizona into a killing field.

In harrowing detail, De León chronicles the journeys of people who have made dozens of attempts to cross the border and uncovers the stories of the objects and bodies left behind in the desert.

The Land of Open Graves will spark debate and controversy.

Review
"The Land of Open Graves is an invaluable book, one full of rich ethnographic accounts of migrants, sharp analysis, and beautiful photographs by Michael Wells (as well as some by the migrants De León encounters). It is a strong indictment of the violence migrants face, particularly of a structural sort, and it calls us to "better understand how our worlds are intertwined and the ethical responsibility we have to one another as human beings." It deserves a broad audience."--NACLA Report on the Americas

"The Land of Open Graves is hard to put down. Its violent and vivid content draws you into a reality that we should all know about, and the author's interpretation provides a political and theoretical perspective that challenges conventional beliefs about undocumented migration." (TLS 2016-01-22)

"A powerful book . . . The Land of Open Graves is very appropriately published in the California Series in Public Anthropology and represents just what public or engaged anthropology can and should be. . . . This is a book that all parties should read." (Anthropology Review Database 2016-02-20)

From the Inside Flap
"De León confronts us with a vivid indictment of the killing fields on the US-Mexico border and reveals the brutality of global inequality in all its goriness and intimate suffering. A self-described refugee from archaeology, De León is revitalizing the field of anthropology by blowing apart the traditional subdisciplinary boundaries. With no holds barred, he offers new paths for theory, methods, and public anthropology." --Philippe Bourgois, author of Righteous Dopefiend and In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio

"Jason De León has written a remarkable book. I know of no other ethnography of life and death on the borderlands that is more moving, theoretically ambitious, or powerful than this eagerly awaited work." --María Elena García, author of Making Indigenous Citizens: Identities, Education, and Multicultural Development in Peru

"This book sears itself into your memory. You literally can't put it down." --Stanley Brandes, Robert H. Lowie Professor of Anthropology, UC Berkeley

"An impressive piece of scholarship, The Land of Open Graves is a brilliant and important book that humanizes the realities of life and death on the migrant trail in southern Arizona."--Randall H. McGuire, author of Archaeology as Political Action

"Jason De León has written that rare and precious book--a masterful deployment of tools from across the broad spectrum of anthropology." --Danny Hoffman, author of The War Machines: Young Men and Violence in Sierra Leone and Liberia

"The Land of Open Graves is a politically, theoretically, and morally important book that mobilizes the four fields of anthropology to demonstrate beyond a doubt how current US border defense policy results in deliberate death. Beautifully written and engaging, it is a must-read for the general public and students across the social sciences." --Lynn Stephen, author of Transborder Lives: Indigenous Oaxacans in Mexico, California, and Oregon and We Are the Face of Oaxaca: Testimony and Social Movements

About the Author

Difficult to Navigate, even harder to use
By Robert D. Watson
There are a large number of math projects here that are mildly interesting, if a little juvenile for most high school teachers to use. Some of them are very complicated, and others are just not complicated enough, but that's all fine by me - a little variety is certainly good. Most of them will require access to the school library or computer lab, and many will take a good 3-5 days in-class to take to completion as written.

Two problems: One is that the book is organized terribly, and the other is that this book doesn't teach a whole lot of math SKILLS.

The book is organized by what it ties into the general math curriculum. So instead of having "algebra" activities, it offers "Math and Language" or "Math and Social Sciences". This makes it very difficult to find specific activities that you can tie into more general lessons topics like proportions, solving equations or graphing.

And speaking of math topics, we get to mention the other major problem I have with the book: so many of these activities do not mesh with the curriculum that is taught in a traditional math class. Regardless of your opinions on what that curriculum should be, I find it difficult for people to argue that we need four to five three-day research projects on the history of famous mathematicians in a geometry classroom. There are a number of others that simply ask students to make decisions on what to spend a budget on, and a whole lot that involve you creating a "profile" of a person or country, which often touch on mathematics, but do not delve particularly deeply into any particular concept. There are some, such as the landmarks project that discuss ideas like proportionality in depth, but I think that too many simply leave these by the wayside in favor of implementing cultural or social aspects.

The book is massive, and by no means have I looked through or tried every project, but I have taken a number of ideas from this book and reworked them to my needs (adding reflection questions to the worksheets, more guidance for some students, and making a few activities more rigorous). The flower bed project (#6) was something that I had a lot of success with in a geometry class, and the aquarium project (#8 I think) was fun, but had to be modified significantly to make it any kind of challenge for my high schoolers.

Unfortunately, unless you spend a large amount of time sifting, organizing and recreating much of the book, you won't find this to be an instantaneous resource. I think that almost every math teacher could find something to like from this book, but if you're not willing to put in the time to use this resource, it could just be something that sits on your shelf. Far from the worst book I've read on the subject, but it definitely needs some work.

A Must-Have Resource for Home Schoolers, Too!
By Cynthia E. Downes
This is a must-have resource for all home school families! The book includes 60 lesson plans that reinforce math concepts and make learning math interesting and fun. Most important, it gives students a reason for learning math!

The lessons easily integrate into other class work including science, social studies, language arts, music, art, sports, recreation, and life skills. It's perfect for those who enjoy doing unit studies!

It was written for students in grades 6-12; however, it can be adapted to younger grades depending on interests and abilities.

How I would use it in a home school setting:

Home school parents can skim through most of the introductory materials that addresses classroom strategies. However, be sure to read over pages 24-42, which includes directions for writing in the math class, an outline of the basic writing process, ideas for using the Internet in math class, and assessment guidelines and forms.

Although each lesson discusses group activities and oral presentations, it's very easy to adapt these lessons to a home school setting. The projects can easily be done individually and written reports are sufficient. If you choose to have your child do an oral presentation, he or she can perform for family members and friends or in a support group or co-op setting.

I would recommend using the lessons in this book, as needed, as part of a unit study; on a once-a-month or once-a-week basis instead of a regular math and composition class; or as needed to work on a particular math concept.

Some of the lesson plans included are:

1. Math and Science: What is the Weather?, Designing a Flower Bed
2. Math and Social Studies: A Great Mathematician, Creating a Scale Map
3. Math and Language: Fictional Numbers-Writing a Story, Rating Math Web Sites
4. Math and Art: I Wanna Be Like Escher, Designing a Quilt Pattern
5. Math and Music: Numbers and Songs, The Math in Music
6. Math and Sports: Choosing a Membership Plan at a Health Club, Comparing Sports Superstar
7. Math and Recreation: Going on Vacation
8. Math and Life Skills: Making a Budget, Buying a Car, The Costs of Pets

Sample lesson: The Geometry and Art of Architecture

Students are directed to do research at the library and online to find examples of interesting architecture. A suggested list of buildings is included or you might select a structure that is related to a topic you are studying, such as a castle for medieval history or the Eiffel Tower for the country of France.

Students are to examine their structures for examples of geometry such as angles, polygons, three-dimensional shapes, symmetry, and parallel or perpendicular lines. They are to draw the structure on poster paper and then label the geometric forms. Finally, they are instructed to write a report about the selected structure, which includes background information on the building as well as a summary of the geometry it represents.

Sample lesson: The Benefits of Recycling

In this lesson, students are instructed to research the benefits recycling offers to people, companies and the environment. After they gather the information, they must analyze it and draw conclusions about the benefits of recycling based on facts. They are to explain their conclusions in a written summary and illustrate with graphs, charts, tables or posters. They must also include a list of resources used in bibliographical format. After the lesson, a visit to a recycling center is suggested. It would also be a good time to start your own recycling projects, such as recycling glass or paper.

Hands-On Math Projects is well worth the investment in time and money. It will stimulate your child's interest in math, as well as reinforce logic and writing skills.

This review is based on the 2nd edition for grades 6-12.

Great multi-level/age/grade resource
By Chris-"Elementary Montessori teacher"
I have third to sixth grade students in my classroom, they are talented, gifted and highly motivated. We use the projects in this book in conjunction with traditional as well as hands-on activities to cover curriculum and standards. The projects in this book are simple and straightforward enough for my younger students to understand and open ended enough to allow the older children the opportunity to go beyond the suggested activity. We have done the projects independently, in partnerships and in small groups. They present their projects to each other when completed. We're currently, doing the math newsletter activity which will become part of a schoolwide newspaper we are creating. The book is designed to link math to other disciplines: science, social studies, language arts, etc. Their final projects are often so thoughtful and well constructed that I include them in our class portfolio. When they complete one project, they beg for the next!
