About the Author
Martin Windrow is series editor at Osprey and an authority on the post-war French army, particularly the Foreign Legion. He is the author of the very successful Men-at-Arms 300: French Foreign Legion since 1945, and Men-at-Arms 322: The French War Indochina War 1946-54, and the critically acclaimed The Last Valley: Dien Bien Phu and the French Defeat in Vietnam (2004). Gerry Embleton has been a leading illustrator and researcher of historical costume since the 1970s, and has illustrated and written Osprey titles on a wide range of subjects for more than 20 years. He is an internationally respected authority on 15th and 18th century costumes in particular. He lives in Switzerland, where since 1988 he has also become well known for designing and creating life-size historical figures for museums.

Great Summary on Foreign Legion Since 1945

Martin Windrow hits another home run with this book. The Osprey format limits how in-depth an author can go on a topic but Windrow gives an excellent overview of the history of Le Legion since '45. It is enough to satisfy the neophyte. For the everyday military historian, it answers most of your questions; and probably will entice you into digging deeper into the history of the Legion.

Martin Windrow and the FFL how can you go wrong. I'll bet any one who has painted a FFL army used his books as a guide to painting FFL figures. I did. What more can I say.

I just want to give this book a shoutout for being AMAZING. It is literally an encyclopedia for food styling. She has every food, what could happen to it, how to fix it, how to make it look best, and what products to use to fix it. This is extremely time saving for people like me who are new to food blogging and can reference everything before starting a recipe. Now, I haven't actually tried her different techniques but she's been in the business along time so I'm sure they are effective. Don't be scared off by the beginning which is very general info on styling in general. Get past that and you'll find the goods. Thanks, Delores!!

Highly recommended...

Use this book as a reference for food styling in our R&D lab. It has helped us improve our photography for Social media and print. Has an exhaustive list of tools, foods, preparation techniques, special effects (like condensation, steam, char, etc.), challenging situations, funny anecdotes from her past that can serve as bad examples or cautionary tales, propping, working with photographers, customers and for yourself, and many other topics. Like any reference, it has its perspective, and it's just one woman's eyes, but she's seen a lot so it's a valuable source of information. Be aware though that other perspectives are out there, and the market can and will shift so things that apply here as desirable may become dated but many of the tools and techniques will never change unless we start eating something entirely different...like pills or gels rather than real food. Like with any skill though, having the information doesn't guarantee success you've got to practice and apply your skills regularly or your results may decline.

As a teacher I try and bring in different professionals so that the kids can speak to the people in the profession and be exposed to all sides of completing the job. I found a food stylist who was willing to come in a speak to the kids and she mentioned the value of the book. She had in fact studied with the author. Based on her recommendation I purchased this book and have been very satisfied with the results. It is easy to read, jam packed fl

My husband was advised to get this book by other home brewers both in classes and online. He has made some very respectable beer. Although the price of the book is very reasonable it created the need for quite an investment of other brew making equipment and products. Well whatever keeps him off the streets.

Great basic to intermediate resource!

When I started brewing I borrowed the 3rd edition from a friend to learn the ropes. I have now been brewing for 3 years and wanted to get this new edition mostly as a reference source. Its a great book with lots of basic info to get you up and brewing as well as some more advanced topics to help you fine tune and improve your beer. There are a few new tweaks in this edition, but I mostly use it to quickly review beer styles/ingredients/technical stuff.

This is the 4th time I have purchased this book. First was the 1st edition, then 3 copies of the second edition. I kept handing out copies for people to read and they never came back. Excellent book for the beginning home brewer and even a seasoned brewer. There is a lot of very well presented information garnished with levity and a lot of "Don't worry, have a home brew" philosophy.

If you are going to San Francisco...

A fascinating book about San Francisco's wild history from the Sixties, through the tempestuous Seventies, into the early Eighties when the City comes together, after much trauma, to cope with the AIDS epidemic. It offers a major re-assessment of Mayor Dianne Feinstein's success in leading San Francisco out of the nightmare of the Jonestown massacre and the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk. And Talbot also credits the 49ers football team of Joe Montana and Bill Walsh with helping San Francisco recover from the culture wars and violence of the '70s. This is a deeply reported book, not just a nostalgia trip. Even if you lived through these decades in San Francisco, you will discover things you never knew. And it's written in a very lively, passionate style. Talbot clearly cares about his City.

Must Read-if you can stand it

I was born in San Francisco in 1959, and moved away in 1985. I witnessed much, if not all, of what is recorded in this fine book. I read anxiously page after page, until I found I could not finish the book. Why? Because it seemed to stir up something in me, something akin to post-traumatic stress syndrome. It was not easy growing up in the Bay Area, during this era.
I come from turn of the last century Italian immigrants; my mother and aunts worked downtown, in the 1940's, dressed as finely as possible on a working girl's salary: gloves, hat, matching handbag, freshly polished shoes. We had a neighbor who worked at I Magnin, and dressed SO elegantly for her job as sales clerk. Yet, the Beats and Hippies were a fascinating sight, despite their grubbiness; a sharp contrast to the fading elegance of SF. And all the rootless people, who come to California, and San Francisco specifically, simply because they fit in nowhere else. I LOVE San Francisco, and proudly boast that I am a native daughter. However, when it came time to raise a family, the increasing cost of living forced us to move farther north, and while initially homesick, I came to appreciate what living in a "normal" place feels like. A sense of relief swept over me when I realized my children would not ride the roller coaster of emotions one had when living or working or growing up in San Francisco, during the era described in this book: Awe, wonder, beauty, terror, fear, confusion, disgust, respect, anger, love, appreciation, neglect.
We helped change the country, or at least sheltered those that had no place else to go. Changes that needed happen to society, but at a very high price, for many. I will finish this book sometime. Mr. Talbot obviously did his homework, and it is sure to become a classic work on my (former) Fair City by the Bay.

A Flawed but Entertaining History of My City

The book is well written, informative, and entertaining. But it is a strange exercise to read, written by someone with a great deal of information and skill but oddly lacking in a native grounding here. The result is a story told with great facility, but flawed in its biased and incomplete perspective and rather frequent lapses in accuracy.

As a native San Francisco Irish-American Catholic of several generations who came of age here in the era he describes, I find that the book takes a lot of liberties and leaves some unfortunate residues. He feels pretty free to slam Irish Catholic San Francisco, a community great in number with roots in the community that precede the Gold Rush. He even uses an ethnic slur: "Mick" in one passage - certainly you would not feel emboldened to present this kind of bias against any other religious or ethnic group in a mainstream non-fiction book release. (It seems that open ethnic and religious bias is quite OK in progressive circles if you are on the 'right' side of the struggle.)

This odd anti-Catholic, sort of love-hate vis the Irish, bias pervades the book. I think that the author found that he could easily portray old school working class San Francisco in a manner of stereotyping by simply calling the old establishment 'the Irish Catholics' (who certainly had power but never 'owned' the City) without having to do a whole lot of challenging research. He can't bring himself to say something nice about beautiful Sts. Peter & Paul's in North Beach without pairing it with a nasty criticism. This beloved church is one among dozens in the City that nurtured and educated hundreds of happy, well-adjusted people for whom the parish was the vital center of the community.

I get that the author needs to construct a narrative: the regressive bad old guard didn't 'get it', fought progressive change tooth-and-nail, and through trials and struggle the forces of progress prevailed and built a new shining city on the hill. A great story except that it relies on a kind of feverish adolescent fantasy version of San Francisco history, from which the author's generation has not seen fit to evolve a more balanced, mature version of past events.

A more mature version might take into account that, for example, dangerous forces were unleashed in the 'the Sixties' and old-time city residents saw their streets besieged by crime and disorder driven by outsiders in the course of only a few years, and that many public officials whom Talbot denounces were merely trying to do their jobs, maintain public order so you know, little kids could go to school safely and grandmas could go to the supermarket without being robbed or shot.

My old Irish Catholic cop friends who policed the Haight during these years still shudder when they describe the kind of terrible violations of runaway youngsters that occurred in the midst of the glorious Summer of Love and its aftermath.

I love the Dead, but Jerry ended up a dead fat junkie; lots of the flower children ended up as brain-dead zombies shuffling back and forth along Haight in SF and Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley; many of the big families from my parish lost at least one brother or sister to drugs and the streets. These years may have been incredibly exciting they also contained terrible tragedy. It is hard to be a curmudgeon about this book, interesting and entertaining as it is, but someone has to speak up and challenge this narrative before it starts to get passed off as an authoritative history, which it most definitely is not.

An average story with below-average literary complexity

Not sure what all the fuss is about on this book because it really is OKAY at best. For one the writing/translation is horrendous, and every time I read it was as if I was reading a high-school level essay. The story is not particularly interesting either; the events that the protagonist encounters include being homeless, and how hungry he is all the time because he cannot afford to eat. Bad things are constantly happening to the protagonist, but sometimes none of the events relate to each other. So why mention it in the first place? Exhausting and Illuminating

Hamsun's main character is so well-rounded that he continually changes the mind about how to perceive his situation. He will, sometimes in a single paragraph, make you feel heart-break, exasperation, disgust and pity. The four part narrative is both exhausting and illuminating with a never ending interiority that delves into the mind of a man perpetually on the brink of starvation. The psychological, emotional and physical toll that the main character endures is given raw and served on a tarnished silver platter. Absolutely brilliant.

Chang's writing is comfortable and easy, like sitting down with a relative for a long chat. In this case, a long chat about what it was like to grow up in New York as an immigrant--the unsuccessful struggle of Min's husband Tian to fight against unspoken racism to become more than a waiter, the struggle for Min to want her daughters to succeed in this English-speaking world without losing her own ability to understand them, the struggle of finding a way to call anyplace "home." I savored every page....until I got to the last third of the book. It took me several chapters to realize that the novella had already ended and I was now in the head of a different immigrant (five short stories are tacked onto the end of the novella.) A bit disconcerting, especially as I hated to leave Min's story behind.

Many spiritual books i've read usually just mention it occasionally or just go straight to the point that being celibate is an important thing for spiritual growth. But this book explain all aspects possible about celibacy. Starts with why is it important, the process on sexual energy transmutation, useful tips and suggestions for success in being celibate like what are the best activities to transmute sexual energy and what kind of diet that help. This book also give warnings about the dangers of being celibate without doing efforts, like meditation/yoga/devotion, to transmute reserved sexual energy as the result from being celibate. The important concept in celibacy, Ojas, is also well explained.

I think this book is more like compilation of few articles about celibacy, not kind a book presents in chapters.

Finally, if you are really interesting and curious about celibacy like me or even planning to be celibate, since this subject is really must for spiritual growth, i think you'll enjoy reading this book.

Very comprehensive book on Brahmacharya (spiritual celibacy)

Not all understand the fundamentals of successfully master your sexual energies. Many books gives pieces of information but not the whole picture. The keys can be summarized as: * right quality of your nutritional intake and drinking plenty of high quality water. * saving your sexual essence * transmuting it to Ojas or the spiritual "glue" that connects us to the universal pranic field. The author also talks about the importance of certain adaptogenic herbs that can help a person in achieving a good "inner fire". Excellent information. This type of information was not widely known to me and I even had been given much contrary information. After experiencing both sides of the issue I favor the approach put forth in this book. There are many benefits to a life of celibacy and celibacy may not be as bad as some may think or even mean what you thought. There is additional information recommending adaptogenic herbs which I had not tried. I am pleased with the results of adding adaptogenic herbs such as Nature's Way Ginseng, Korean, 60 Capsules to my diet as well and am thankful to the author for suggesting such things.

Missed the mark for us

I bought this book as something fun and interactive to do with my husband. I give it two stars because it is something to get you talking and discussing feelings and opinions even if you disagree with the book. That beats just sitting on the couch watching tv. Otherwise though we both felt this book wasn't very revealing and often missed the mark for us entirely. For example, in one question it asks you to describe how you would feel standing in the open door of a flying airplane getting ready to parachute for the first time. In the answer section it says your response indicates how you feel when you are about to have sex with someone for the first time. Okay, how many people wouldn't answer that question with words like nervous anticipation or exhilaration? Both of us did at any rate. Not very revealing. My friend said terrified because she is afraid of heights but she completely rejected the idea that she experiences terror at the prospect of sex. I would imagine alot of people might describe themselves as being fearful of parchuting out of an airplane but not necessarily be quaking with fear in bed.
There were also a lot of questions that seemed to be geared to tapping into your subconcious feelings but for us concrete life experience seemed to skew the results. For instance, in one scenerio you are suppose to be searching for gems and it asks you to describe the size and type of gem you searched for. The answer key says the gem you described is a symbol of your sense of self worth. My husband had described a small not very valuable type of mineral but only because the question brought back happy memories of looking for this on hikes with his father as a child. We both felt that this sort of thing came up rather often for us.

Kooky!

Well.... this book is quite interesting.... there is the good and the bad. First, the good: the scenarios they set up are quite interesting and imaginative. Such as the one about what you would say to a camel that has carried you through an expansive desert or the one about a dark, long stairway leading into a basement where a stranger awaits you. So that's the cool part. Reading the scenarios and deciding what you would do... But, turn the page.. and here's the bad part. The explanations they give for your decisions are let's face it.. ...! You said you thought the long stairway leading into the basement was 20 steps (to make it seem spooky) vs. 5. So the book tells you that that means you've had 20 emotionally scarring problems in your life. That is so not true! I am a very happy person!! I DID NOT have 20 emotional problems in my past. The book goes along like this the whole time. The reasons/explanations they give are ... in my opinion.. But oh well, the scenarios are cool and provide some entertainment.
