About the Author
Daniel Marston is Professor of Military Studies in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University. He is also the Principal of the Military and Defence Studies Program at the Australian Command and Staff College in Canberra, Australia. He has also been a Visiting Fellow with the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War. His first book Phoenix from the Ashes, an in-depth assessment of how the British/Indian Army turned defeat into victory in the Burma campaign of the Second World War, won the Field Marshal Templer Medal Book Prize in 2003. He completed his doctorate in the history of war at Balliol College, Oxford, and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

Peter Kling has unveiled the mother of all conspiracies in his book Letters to Earth...You Can Survive Armageddon! He begins by enticing the reader with small easy to follow themes which gradually build into larger and larger more entangled webs that carry the reader along in spiralling momentum. It is the sort of book you can't put down. As soon as you read one page you want to read the next. It is this infection, which makes it so entertaining from beginning to end. The reader is kept overawed by the insights and knowledge provided in the text. The amount of research that has gone into this book must be astounding.
To begin with there is a battle between God and Lucifer. Around this time Adam and Eve are created using genetic manipulation. The man and the woman are given the commandment to 'Love' their God 'Jehova' and to go forth and multiply. No other commandment was given to them from God. However Lucifer was to find a way to twist this to his own ends. Through a series of manipulations Nimrod comes into being and he was accredited with building several great cities including Babylon. By this means Nimrod sets himself up to reign as god along with Semiramis his wife. She it is said after Nimrods death became pregnant and gave birth to a son named Tammuz.
These three are frequently compared to the three main religions, Judaism, Islam and Christianity, or in other places as the trinity. After some discussion, different world leaders are portrayed and focus is placed on the Bank of Rothschild. This institution is researched extensively even to its Jewish founding and how the name was changed from Bauer to Rothschild. It appears that this bank began to grow when it first began to finance wars, for example Napoleon on one hand and Wellington on the other. The bank could not lose. Soon these exploits were to become large enough that whole countries would owe their survival to the bank. Of course, many groups are mentioned in the book, the Knights Templar, the Masons, the Illuminati all with similar agendas to amass great wealth. The only two countries to resist the banks takeover bid were Russia and the United States but with the murder of the Tzar, Russia fell into the hands of the despot Stalin who then sold out to the Rothschild bank. Likewise America found itself a servant of the bank following the war of 1812. Symbols are frequently assigned to show allegiances and the book talks at length about the Rothschild meaning Red Shield and the red diadem motif it supports. This red star of David represents Zionism which seems to be central to the war between God and Lucifer.
Symbolism is everywhere from the exuberance of the Masonic movement to many commercial symbols even those found on the one dollar bill.

Peter Kling argues that the three main religions have all been usurped and guided to follow the worship of God as the light which promotes not the true God but Lucifer whose name means light bearer. Kling establishes that humankind has always been under the yoke of powerful governments and that it was never meant to be this way. In the same way people have always been forced to 'worship' god but Kling points out that from the beginning people were supposed to be free and not to worship god but to Love God.

The conclusion inevitably leads to a world war known as Armageddon where the majority of people are destroyed. This is a war between gods and humanity. Only those who know the true Jehovah God have any chance of survival. However Jehovah has one last trick up His sleeve and that is to use his skill at genetic engineering to raise up the martyrs and those loyal to Him in a final resurrection.
Klings writing style is relaxed and colloquial and he has a way of describing even the most complicated conspiracy in easy to follow logical steps. This book also carries a message to the reader. As it unfolds its climactic conclusion the reader is suddenly confronted by their own views, standards and principals and realizes a need to make some life changing decisions such as 'Which bank should I trust with my money' and 'Who do I vote for' not to mention the biggest decision of all 'What God do I really follow'?

Reading this book is like embarking into a voyage in which you can neither predict what you are going to meet en route nor where is going to take you. The author is quite often quoting from the Bible-an opportunity to brush and freshen one's memory on religion- and he identifies the various "gods" from all over the World with extra terrestrial beings, or with fallen Angels or any way having nothing to do with the One true God.

Mr. King through the long history of mankind-which he sets down- narrates all the events, all discoveries and mainly the Bible and becomes an ardent advocate of true values man has been endowed by his Creator, namely Love, Freedom, Equality and Free Will. He is setting down many myths such as the mythical King Nimrod and his wife Semiramis, the myth of Adam and Eve, the myth of Lucifer, the fallen angel, and many historical facts and events. He clearly distinguishes God from Church and Religion but not from the Bible.

All in all I was impressed by the volume of information this book reveals making it quite obvious that the author has made a thorough research in a variety of subjects and has managed to form his global point of view which he shares with his readers, not actually imposing it like a dogma but with various questions inviting the readers to think by themselves.

The remarkable thing is, except from the amount of information and the extensive reference to the Bible, the fact that another book is incorporated-which I have not heard of- with the title of "Protocol". Out of this, as he connects the contents with the original story of Lucifer, he sets down a conspiracy theory-a frightening one indeed- and which he also connects with doomsday predictions and eschatology.

I would have been lost had he not assisted me to reach at the end a safe conclusion. If one wishes to be saved from a possible or probable Armageddon, then one should best not allow himself to be dependent on Monetary Organizations, such as Banks or other similar institutions, not to be influenced by Astrologers, Politicians, any Church dogmas and the like, but be a free man, his own master as God willed him to be, and God's Grace will be with him.

I must not forget to mention the language and the expressions of the author which are first class enabling the reader to follow easily through all events the theories and the line of thought of the author. In conclusion the book is a well written book worth spending time to read its 360 pages.

Outstanding: good from cover to cover and great as a reference

I wanted to get a good birds eye overview of classic antiquity, get a sense of continuity and fill the gaps in my knowledge. After some failed attempts, I found this book. It exceeded my expectations. I read the book from cover to cover, but it can also be used as a great reference (the chapters are self-contained and make references to other chapters in the book when necessary).

Besides covering specifics periods, the book attempts to show the interrelations of the different processes and-the main theses of the author-how continuity rather than great "revolutions" shaped classical history. The book covers not only political and military history but also cultural history. Culture shapes the historical continuity process, and the examples are many; religious development and influence across the whole Mediterranean and the Near East; the influence of Greek philosophy in politics in the roman empire and in the theology of Christianity; and more.

Since the chapters cover specific topics (Freeman doesn't fall in the error of trying to write chronologically) the book is also very useful as a reference. Each chapter ends with a complete bibliographic essay with references of specific periods or topics.

Freeman's style is dynamic and engaging, and impressive achievement for the amount of history he covers in this book.

Fantastic book for all interested in antiquity

In this book, Charles Freeman accomplishes the seemingly impossible -- a single-volume, well-researched, overview of the "big 3" that is digestible and entertaining. Classics PhD's probably will not get much from it, but they are not the intended audience. Instead, Freeman's book is for those with little (or no) formal background in Classics, and I think it is a perfect springboard for those looking to wade into the daunting waters of antiquity.

Just the overview I was looking for!

Even though I teach Western civilization courses, I found Freeman's book a delightfully easy read, even for non-historians, of the artistic, religious, cultural, and intellectual traditions of these great civilizations, and, believe it or not, I also learn at least a few things I didn't know or find clarification of things I thought I knew. His The Closing of the Western Mind is one of my favorite books, and I find this one a delight for the mind as well.

Not as much of a course as a short phrasebook

This particular course has always been the weakest spot in usually very good Colloquial series. Even though this is a completely new book, I'm sorry to say Routledge hasn't taken into account any of the massive criticism directed at the previous editions, and the "course" is unlike other Colloquial courses, being more of a phrasebook with a very limited vocabulary.

There are three Colloquial Arabic books published by Routledge, but only one (Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf) lives up to the high standard in Routledge's Colloquial Series. Having said that, even Colloquial Arabic of Egypt, though rather "light" by Routledge standards, is far better than this course.

This book is unsatisfactory since:
1. Learning a new language is reasonably hard, and most Colloquial books published by Routledge are about 300-400 pages. This one in barely 200 pages and, what is more, its font is enourmous. This means that the material in this book compares to 1/3 in another Colloquial book. I don't think Arabic is that much easier...

2. In this very short book, you'll learn very little vocabulary. Colloquial courses like Colloqual Italian, Colloquial Czech or even Colloquial Icelandic teach over 2000 words. This book, in sharp contrast, does not even reach 1000 words.

3. The grammar is explained very briefly, and you don't get any understanding of it.

I'm very interested in Arabic, and the Arabic of the Levant in particular, so it's very disappointing that this book don't live up to the most rudimentary expectations. Routledge is renowned as the worlds leading publisher of high quality language courses (justified in 99% of the cases) and I sincerely hope that they will remove this disgrace and replace it with a book worthy their reputation. If you want to learn Colloquial Arabic, go to Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. I'm afraid there's no great course on Levantine Arabic to recommend, but Elihay's course in four volumes is far better than this one, so is Kattab's Lebanese Arabic.

Not enough practice in reading the script

I think this book starts out in the right direction by spending adequate time on the Arabic script and then follows up with a brief linguistic analysis of phonological features. Unfortunately, I feel that way too much of the vocabulary, useful phrases, and reading exercises are presented in transliteration rather than actual Arabic script.

I assume a purchaser of this book would be well informed of how difficult any of the dialects of Arabic are, so it's my opinion that forcing us to "sink or swim" with the script from the beginning would have been better. Or at least give us a choice. There's no way a beginner can go and back-form a vocab word in Arabic script based on the transliterations and be correct 100% of the time, especially in regards to the vowel diacritics.

I think the recordings could use better planning as well. More repetitions of sounds in the beginning lessons, at various rates (slow-medium-conversational). A lot of the vowels and consonants sound the same. The native speaker is either poorly recorded, or there is a lack of training for the student on how to create and repeat sounds, for example the difference in articulation of pharyngeal and uvular consonants.

Grade 8-12 Brian Robeson, 13, is the only passenger on a small plane flying him to visit his father in the Canadian wilderness when the pilot has a heart attack and dies. The plane drifts off course and finally crashes into a small lake. Miraculously Brian is able to swim free of the plane, arriving on a sandy tree-lined shore with only his clothing, a tattered windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. The novel chronicles in gritty detail Brian's mistakes, setbacks, and small triumphs as, with the help of the hatchet, he manages to survive the 54 days alone in the wilderness. Paulsen effectively shows readers how Brian learns patienceto watch, listen, and think before he actsas he attempts to build a fire, to fish and hunt, and to make his home under a rock overhang safe and comfortable. An epilogue discussing the lasting effects of Brian's stay in the wilderness and his dim chance of survival had winter come upon him before rescue adds credibility to the story. Paulsen tells a fine adventure story, but the sub-plot concerning Brian's preoccupation with his parents' divorce seems a bit forced and detracts from the book. As he did in Dogsong (Bradbury, 1985), Paulsen emphasizes character growth through a careful balancing of specific details of survival with the protagonist's thoughts and emotions. Beware for Younger Readers!

I am a grandmother with small granddaughters, one of whom is a very precocious reader. She is in first grade, and I ordered Hatchet with another book, which she fortunately became interested in. In a fit of boredom, I picked up the book that was left at my house. I was tremendously relieved she had not taken Hatchet to begin it, without the knowledge of me or her parents! I do not think it would have been appropriate for her, at the age of 7. I will be placing it in an unobtrusive location, to wait for her to read when she is a couple years older.

I find it interesting that not a single review I found mentioned at the start, when the pilot of the small aircraft dies mid-flight, the process is very specifically detailed--the odor, the vision of his face as he dies. Additionally, Brian is angry about his mother, and her extra-marital affair--this book is significantly more explicit about adult problems than most children's literature that is written for 3rd and 4th graders. I thought, the Force was with me! I cannot imagine my granddaughter reading this book now. The lesson I learned, is to peruse books I'm not familiar with before I hand them over--I am writing about a little girl whose mother read portions of The Yearling to her at age 5, when she begged and pleaded, and sat attentively throughout! (my daughter said she "edited" as she read the book) For younger readers, I'd advise parental supervision, and discussion of the issues detailed in The Hatchet, if your child is ready for it.

First in an adventure series with great appeal for middle-school, high-school,
and older readers. This is the kind of book that continues in your dreams
once you have put it down. Great for reluctant readers, as well as ESL learning
Gary Paulsen is never consdescending or obviously trying to simplify his
stories. They are simply remarkable at all levels. This would be a great
gift or prize for any boy or girl. Adults seem equally enthusiastic about
this unforgettable book. It does not involve sex, seduction, or ramance,
except the romance of the wild and breathtaking adventure and survival
skills. This story inspires readers to think about our
innate intelligence to survive under difficult circumstances.
A fast-paced, but thoroughly modern Robinson Crusoe adventure.

A great lesson on perseverance

I read this book in elementary school back in 1995-1996. I'm re-reading it and so far it has held up well.

As a kid, this book gave me an appreciation for the outdoors and surviving in the world when the odds are stacked against you. A great lesson on perseverance.

It also instilled an idea in my mind to not take everyday commodities and experiences for granted.

I loved Gary Paulsen's books as a child, and the other Hatchet books in this series are great, too. I just discovered writing this review that there is now a 5th book.

Her career began with The Lana Sisters and continued with folk group The Springfields before her first solo success in 1963 with the unforgettable “I Only Want to Be with You.” Subsequent million–sellers included “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself,” “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me,” and “Son of a Preacher Man.” As the 1960s came to a close, critical acclaim and a successful BBC television series couldn’t save Dusty’s career, and she slipped into obscurity. Following a self–imposed exile marred by alcohol and drug abuse, she re–emerged in 1987 to enjoy new success singing with the Pet Shop Boys. She finally lost her long battle with cancer in 1999, just short of her sixtieth birthday.

About the Author

Paul Howes was the associate producer of the acclaimed Dusty Springfield box set Simply Dusty and has consulted on many Dusty Springfield releases providing compilations, sleeve notes, and annotations. He is the publisher of the Dusty Springfield Bulletin, and a director of Zone Records.

Details dates of each recording. Was hoping it would contain info on Dusty talking about each song. More of a chronicle of Dusty's entire career. Shows dates of all of her engagements. Enlightens readers that Dusty was a female pioneer in the studio and basically ran the show regarding the entire production and arrangements. Controlled how all of the instruments were played and sounded. She went to great pains to get the perfect sounding recordings that she gave us.. All of her perfectionism in the studio paid off. Great color photos of Dusty.

The 2010 reprint of "The Complete Dusty Springfield" lives up to its title. An in-depth, alphabetical listing of every recording made by Dusty, beginning with the Lana Sisters, working its way thru the Springfields, and finally, her solo career, the book is truly indispensable for fans. Included with each song is the writer, producer, session info, and which albums they appear on, stereo/mono content, and 45 releases.

The lists don't stop there; the book goes on to list UK and US Radio and TV appearances and which songs she performed on them, ditto concert and cabaret appearances, a diary of Dusty's life events, US and UK discographies, and so much more.

This book rightly focuses on what's important: the musical legacy of Dusty Springfield. I was surprised by how meticulously detailed and researched this book was. Five stars and highly recommended reading even for casual fans.

What a terrific read, tabloid free. This book is just about the music, a song by song description like excellent liner notes listed by alphabetic order as opposed to chronology. The reverence Paul Howes holds for Dusty, it's evident by the loving track by track annotation. The candid snapshots are a plus and the unreleased recordings adds intrigue and hope that the unreleased surviving recordings will see the light of day

Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) was an American author widely known for his children’s books. Baum was born Chittenango, New-York into a devout Methodiste family He had German, Scots-Irish, and English ancestry, and was the seventh of nine children of Cynthia Ann and Benjamin Ward Baum, only five of whom survived into adulthood. With ironic or nonsensical morals attached to their ends, their tone is more satirical, glib, and tongue-in-cheek than is usual in children's stories; the serialization in newspapers for adult readers was appropriate for the materials. "The Magic Bon Bons" was the most popular of the tales, judging by number of reprints.

Not the Best Edition

This is a wonderful book for anyone with a taste for humorous fantasy. The stories are short and well written. There are no illustrations in this particular edition. Be aware of that, if you like the book enough, and consider finding a more robust printing to love and keep on a book shelf. Ultimately, though, any reader will find an extremely enjoyable read here.

Stories with a moral AND interesting illustrations

This book gives interesting stories with a moral at the end of each story and has illustrations on each page. The stories vary in length but can be read quickly due to the author's writing style. While different from "Oz" books, these stories are still a lot of fun.
