About the Author
Barry Saltzman, 1932-2001, was professor of geology and geophysics at Yale University and a pioneer in the theory of weather and climate, in which he made several profound and lasting contributions to knowledge of the atmosphere and climate. Saltzman developed a series of models and theories of how ice sheets, atmospheric winds, ocean currents, carbon dioxide concentration, and other factors work together, causing the climate to oscillate in a 100,000-year cycle. For this and other scientific contributions, he received the 1998 Carl Gustaf Rossby Research Medal, the highest award from the American Meteorological Society. Saltzman was a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an honorary member of the Academy of Science of Lisbon. His work in 1962 on thermal convection led to the discovery of chaos theory and the famous "Saltzman-Lorenz attractor."

A reader for intermediate-level Spanish courses, courses in Composition and Conversation, or Civilization. Perhaps no other story is as compelling, as universal, or conveys so much about a culture as a legend. Recognizing this, Leyendas del mundo hispano offers 12 legends from Mexico, Colombia, El Salvador, Spain, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay, Cuba, and the United States. These stories illustrate the blending of cultures (Spanish, Indigenous, Mestizo), the creation of new legends, as well as the evolution of legends. The five National Standards of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities inform the philosophy and rich pedagogy of the text.

From the Back Cover

Perhaps no other story is as compelling, as universal, or conveys as much about a culture as does a legend. In this widely used reader, the second edition of Leyendas del mundo hispano offers 12 Hispanic legends from Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia¿ Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, New Mexico (U.S.), Paraguay, Peru, Spain, and Uruguay. Abundant pre- and post-reading activities accompany each story and help students improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills.

Highlights to the new edition
  • A preliminary chapter presents popular North American legends in order to provide a framework for the Hispanic legends and create a link to something they already know.
  • 4 new legends: an Inca creation myth, an Arab-Spanish legend, a Cuban legend/myth, and a Sephardic legend.
  • Each chapter has:
    • A listening activity that corresponds to the audio CD
    • Internet activities that refer students to the Leyendas web site
    • An activity involving a map or other visual
  • The web-based activities encourage students to look beyond the stories to the context in which they were created.
  • A more robust Spanish-English glossary
Audio CD

Since legends are an inherently aural medium, an audio CD has been created that contains a spoken version of each legend. Students can practice their listening comprehension, feel the rhythm of the language, and experience the intonation and inflection of the words. The Audio CD invites students to journey back in time and experience the legends just as they were initially experienced—in the telling for aural preservation from one generation to another. With each telling, the legends take on the particular characteristics of the time and the teller. One spoken version is offered for each legend.

Why legends? First, stories convey information and describe events and their consequences, which encourages us to react both intellectually and effectively. Second, stories stimulate our imagination, encouraging us to think about the possible, as well as the actual. Since the earliest times, stories have engaged us to imagine what it would be like to be someone else, thus we begin to treat others with as much respect as we would wish to be treated, as we learn more about others and ourselves. Finally, and for perhaps the most important reason, we offer these legends because everyone loves a good story. We only have to look at the success of such modern legends as Harry Potter to recognize that a fine story engages readers of all ages.

Although American students are aware of legends and myths that they have heard since childhood, they may not be aware of their purpose or may not easily associate the lessons with legends from the Spanish-speaking world. Therefore, in the second edition, we have included a preliminary chapter with a few examples to refresh a student's memory. These include Davy Crockett, Johnny Appleseed, Pocahontas, King Midas, and Gente nube, a moving story dating from the time of slavery in the U.S., and which is on the audio program. This preliminary chapter, in Spanish, sets the tone for those that follow.

The following 12 chapters present a panorama of legends from the Hispanic world. In developing these legends for learners of Spanish, we sought illustrations of the blending of cultures (Spanish, Indigenous, Mestizo, Jewish, African, Arab), the creation of new legends, and the retention of old traditions. For example, the legend of La Llorona is known throughout the Spanish-speaking world, and the versions have a different message depending on the era and region in which they were popular. In many versions, a woman is driven to kill her children; the method may be by knife, drowning, or abandonment, but in all of them, the woman is either vilified or romanticized in her quest for revenge against men. The legend has been used to teach Christian values, to warn against crossing social classes, and/or to rearm the strength of the female figure. Her rebellion has made her the antithesis of the passive Virgin, yet most Spanish speakers will say they were warned to beware of La Llorona, who for many represents a female "bogeyman."

The themes of legends are universal, such as in La Casa de los Munecos where we see familiar questions of money, power, honor, and revenge. In the legend of Los volcanes we see the traits of fidelity and courage, which were important values in pre-Columbian culture and persist as such in modern Mexico. The story is complemented by Los Amantes de Teruel, the Spanish legend of star-crossed lovers. Los cadejos from El Salvador contrasts good and evil in a single familiar animal, the dog. An Argentine/Paraguayan legend explains the origin of yerba mate as a symbol of friendship and good will. The Paraguayan legend, El nanduti, underscores again the power of friendship while also highlighting the merit of indigenous talents. The Colombian legend, El Dorado, demonstrates the futility of the search for imagined treasure. The colonial version of La Llorona exemplifies the danger of falling in love with someone above one's station.

New to this edition is a creation myth, El mito de la creacion Inca, which offers a glimpse at the level of development of the peoples of the altaplanicie of South America before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. We have also added three legends that represent the multicultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world: El Abencerraje y la hermosa Jarifa is a Moorish tale that stresses the sense of honor (pundonor) so characteristic of the Spanish people. El ano que llovieron tortillas, set in New Mexico, is a Sephardic legend carried there from Spain and other Jewish communities throughout the world. Forced to flee Spain, many Jews found a safe haven in the remote areas of New Mexico and in the present-day American Southwest. Their religious practices were hidden from public eye, and often only the women in the family knew their true background and maintained the religious traditions of these Crypto Jews. Finally, La leyenda de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre illustrates the power of faith among the people of Cuba. We use this story as a touchstone for the rich African heritage in Cuban culture. All of these legends have an unequivocal potential for helping students develop their creativity, as well as to discover both universal and culturally unique values.

Relationship to the Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for the 21st Century

The five standards proposed by the National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project (1996) are integrated into the philosophy of the text. The approach and activities develop the areas of "communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities."

In second-language instruction, legends provide a superb context to make information meaningful to learners (connections). For example, animal legends incorporate real and imaginary creatures, descriptions, and emotions; architectural legends expand descriptive vocabulary: colors, dimensions, and measurements; topographical legends help students make comparisons between their own environment and others. Legends are traditionally aural literature, the use of which encourages students to become good listeners (communication). The activities included in this text provide opportunities for students to practice the three modes of communication as outlined in the communication standard: interpersonal, interpretational and presentational. In legends we see daily routines, verbal and nonverbal communication, and ways of communicating beliefs (cultures). They embody the three "p's" of culture, perspectives, practices and products, making them perhaps the most complete example of cultural authenticity. The stories provide the context for instruction of vocabulary, syntax, and functions of language (comparisons). Finally, whenever possible, students are encouraged to go beyond the classroom to use the resources of their community and beyond to use Spanish for personal enjoyment and enrichment (communities). Each chapter has at least two activities in which students do related research through the Companion Website, http://www.prenhall.com/leyendas

Audience

The Leyendas text is intended for intermediate students of Spanish. It may be used as a supplement to a grammar text or as a stand-alone text for Conversation and Composition classes. Although there is no explicit presentation of grammar, we believe that grammar is reinforced through the telling of the legends and the variety of activities. The text can also be used to provide a richer context for Hispanic civilization courses, and even Spanish Phonetics, through the use of the audio CD.

Organization

Each chapter opens with the Contexto cultural, which contains information to help students situate the legend within its historical and cultural context. This section encourages students to recall their studies in other courses and to make connections to previous knowledge. Pre-reading activities refer to information in the Contexto cultural, introduce new vocabulary and concepts, and supply advance organizers and global questions for the reading. Because we believe that learners can understand much more than they can produce, we employ a variety of tenses along with preparation and redundancy to make the stories comprehensible. Low-frequency vocabulary is glossed when it is not transparent from the context of the legend and not included in the pre-reading activities.

Post-reading activities progress from convergent Comprension activities to divergent Expansion activities. Comprerision activities vary from chapter to chapter, including "Who might have said?" to "Order the events and retell the story." Expansion activities include further investigation, mini-drama, debate, and guided writing. The final chapter invites students to ask someone outside of class to relate a legend, which they must then retell to the class.

Audio Program

Legends are inherently an aural medium; they are passed down from generation to generation, and with each telling take on the particular characteristics of the times and the teller. It is only logical that the users of this text should also hear the legend. We suggest that students first read the Contexto cultural and do the Preparacion activities. Then they may choose to read the legend before listening to it, or listen to the legend before reading it. Since reading and listening are very different activities, we discourage students from reading and listening simultaneously. In fact, the recorded version is more conversational, and therefore it is not identical to the written version. The Expansion activities should follow the listening.

Summary of Changes in the Second Edition
  • The new edition has 13 chapters. We have added a preliminary chapter entitled, Leyendas de to mundo, which explores popular stories that students have most likely heard, such as Davy Crockett and Johnny Appleseed. It also explains the differences between legends and myths and shows how sometimes stories contain elements of both, such as that of King Midas. The preliminary chapter helps students understand the importance of legends and myths to civilization, and creates a bridge between U.S. culture and Hispanic culture.
  • In order to underscore the diversity inherent in the Hispanic world, we have added four new stories: an Inca creation myth, an Arab Spanish legend, a Cuban legend/myth, and a Sephardic legend. We have removed Las once mil virgenes and the modern version of La Ll...

Beautifully descriptive prose and delightful illustrations cultivate a message of mindfulness and emotional awareness to help children fully experience the present moment. Rather than labeling or defining specific emotions and feelings, Visiting Feelings invites children to sense, explore, and befriend any feeling with acceptance and equanimity. Children can explore their emotions with their senses and nurture a sense of mindfulness. Gaining this objectivity allows space for a more considered response to the feelings. Practicing mindfulness can also enhance many aspects of well-being, help develop insight, empathy, and resiliency.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 3—Through a poetic text, children are encouraged to identify and explore their emotions. "Do you have a feeling/that's visiting today?/Can you open your door/and invite it to play?/Can you ask what it wants,/and then check it out?" Readers are asked to embrace their feelings, to treat them like friends. Feelings are described through the use of similes and metaphors: "Is it sharp like stepping/on stones with bare feet?/Or smooth like ice cream-your favorite treat?" They are also personified: "Is it warm or cold?/Sour or sweet?/Does it shiver with fear/when the two of you meet?" The full-page, digitally created illustrations feature hand-painted textures and overlays. They have a dreamy quality as the feelings swirl around the youngsters in soft pastel colors. The end pages offer additional information for parents. The high-quality, appealing art will hold the attention of younger children, but discussion will be necessary for understanding this lyrical flow of moods. Paired with Wendy Cooper's A Is Amazing: Poems About Feelings (Frances Lincoln, 2013), the book has a lot of potential for teaching students how to describe their reactions to different situations. —Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX

Review
Visiting Feelings presents an exquisite lesson in mindfulness and dealing with emotions by letting children know it s OK to feel however they may and simply embrace the experience. The book stresses that feelings are neither bad nor good, they just are. Welcoming your feelings in, and actually making friends with them, is the best way to learn more about yourself and what your emotions are trying to teach you. The lesson is simple yet deep and playfully accessible for children and adults alike. --AnxietyFreeChild.com

This lyrically illustrated beauty of a book is the doorway into accepting feelings that arise and accepting oneself for experiencing those feelings. From the first page through the last, a light-hearted, rhyming poem encourages the young reader to welcome and listen to feelings, as though they are visitors, inquiring into shape, color image, location in the body, and the origin of the feeling. In the author s note to parents, she includes activities adults and children can do together to increase meaning and connection between them, along with breathing and self-awareness exercises.
Written by a psychologist and yoga teacher, this book belongs on the shelf of everyone who serves children parents, grandparents, therapists, aunts, uncles and teachers. --LifeForce Yoga

Our names are ashley and sara! we are twins and we read this book because our aunt and our favorite cousin showed it to us. It made us think about our feelings and we felt good after reading it. our grandpa just passed away and this book made us feel better about our feelings made it eisier for us to talk about it. We think lots of kids should read it because it will make them better understand their feelings!Instead of five stars, we would give it a million if we could! Thanks so much Lauren Rubenstien for writing this awesome book! we hope everyone will enjoy it as much as we did!!!!!!!!

Sweet poetic read..... More than that only through adult guidance
By jacj
Visiting Feelings is very aesthetic and inviting. The illustrations are bright, gender and ethnic inclusive, which definitely will hold children's attention.
About the content: The story line itself does not contain much educational information about feelings or how to express them... It is rather to be used as a tool to elicit feelings. (In the back, there are tips for adults on how to use the book: These are very useful)
Being a hospital chaplain, focused on child bereavement, I bought the book hoping to find a tool to help children express difficult feelings. I read it with my 12-year son using the language of the book to ask him how he felt inside. I was glad to see him interacting (he is very introverted) even thought the book seemed below his age bracket. Yet, I doubt he would have gotten much out of the book on his own.. .If the book is going to be more than a poetic sweet read for children, the parent must be proactive, lead the conversation, ask inviting questions using the language of the book....
In summary: A potential tool for conversation... And useful for visiting feeling only if guided by a parent or an adult

The Kept Woman: A Novel, by Karin Slaughter

The Skimm Reads calls it "a thriller that's part True Detective, part The Girl On The Train. All parts gripping."

Husbands and wives. Mothers and daughters. The past and the future.

Secrets bind them. And secrets can destroy them.

The author of Pretty Girls returns with an electrifying, emotionally complex thriller that plunges its fascinating protagonist into the darkest depths of a mystery that just might destroy him.

With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.

Studying the body, Sara Linton—the GBI’s newest medical examiner and Will’s lover—realizes that the extensive blood loss didn't belong to the corpse. Sure enough, bloody footprints leading away from the scene indicate there is another victim—a woman—who has vanished . . . and who will die soon if she isn’t found.

Will is already compromised, because the site belongs to the city’s most popular citizen: a wealthy, powerful, and politically connected athlete protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers—a man who’s already gotten away with rape, despite Will’s exhaustive efforts to put him away.

But the worst is yet to come. Evidence soon links Will’s troubled past to the case . . . and the consequences will tear through his life with the force of a tornado, wreaking havoc for Will and everyone around him, including his colleagues, family, friends—and even the suspects he pursues.

Relentlessly suspenseful and furiously paced, peopled with conflicted, fallible characters who leap from the page, The Kept Woman is a seamless blend of twisty police procedural and ingenious psychological thriller -- a searing, unforgettable novel of love, loss, and redemption.

Not what I wanted to read about.
By Lynn McLean
I have always really liked Karin Slaughter's books. I especially like the Will Trent series.I would not enjoy a series centered on Angie. More than half of this book is devoted to Angie, a thoroughly unsympathetic central character for a book,. We got to read about who she talked to, who she met. what just crazy, selfish thoughts she has, how her car was running. I kept fast forwarding hoping we'd get back to the characters I thought the book would be about, Will and Sara, Amanda and Faith, and their lives. I also think Slaughter has pretty much wrung all she can out of Will's sad past and I would enjoy more story lines about his present day and his life with Sara. These are great characters and maybe there could be a more interest centered on their present day lives and challenges given that they have such interesting lives and occupations. Everybody moves on sooner or later, especially if they are happy. I was very disappointed that the ending seems to portend yet more of the same. I would be careful when the next Trent book is released to make sure it's mostly about the characters I want to read about. before I buy.

A story that was a long time coming....
By texasreader-stacy
I have been reading the Grant County/Will Trent series since the start. And Karin Slaughter is one of my top 3 mystery/thriller series. So it pains me to score this book lower than a 5. LIked it YES, really liked it NO. No because I didn't get what I personally wanted from the book, not that it's a bad book or that the story isn't an amazing suspense/thriller. It's just, for me, I was a bit disappointed.

This story was a long time coming. We have all been wanting some kind of resolution with the Sara/Will/Angie storyline. Honestly, we have all wanted Angie to go away and never come back. And it looked like we might have gotten that, for a split second. But this book is really about Angie's backstory. Who she is, why she does what she does. She is a horrible person, and she can't let Will go so he can be happy with Sara. She continually pokes at their lives, reminding them that she is like a cockroach that will never go away.

The story that Angie's story is threaded thru is nothing special. Basketball greats acting like spoiled, men who think they can get away with using and abusing women. Blah, blah, blah. It is just a platform to pull all the players together.

I won't spoil the real identity of the players, you get to put that puzzle together yourself. And it is a true Karin Slaughter puzzle. I almost had to get a whiteboard out to follow the bloodline and trail of identities and relationships. That, I will give 5 stars, because that is what Slaughter is great at. Building the suspense of the ultimate puzzle. And it's a brilliant puzzle, surprises around every corner.

My problem is I usually get resolution, and I didn't get that. Not the resolution that I wanted anyway. And maybe it will come in the next book (i hope so). I believe that Will and Sara deserve to have something after all the pain and loss they have had in their lives.

Not a stand alone book, great addition to the series.
By Jennifer MM
If you have followed the Will Trent series from the beginning, especially if you have followed the series since Sarah and her first husband you will enjoy this newest addition. If you are new to the series you will struggle with not only the storyline, but Will Trent in particular - you may not even like Will in this book...this would be so unfair as he is a great character.
This book focuses a lot on the back story of Will and Angie (Will's wife), issues that have come up between Angie and Sarah (Will's girlfriend), and Angie's past with the department. The past is all tied together with the current case that the department is currently working on, with Angie right smack in the middle of. It is really hard to explain without giving spoilers.
Slaughter does what she normally does and gives great character development and a fantastic story that builds on her previous books. I honestly don't feel this is a stand alone book because there is so much rich history about characters that we have come to love (or hate) and to not have that going into this book, well I could see were you would just dislike all the characters.
I do wish for a more permanent ending with Angie. I am really sick of her having her claws in Will. I believe Slaughter wants to try to get us to like her in some small way like she did Lena in previous books, but I was never a fan of Lena's either.

THE FAMOUS "LIFE" OF JESUS, TAKEN FROM THE AKASHIC RECORDS
By Steven H Propp
Levi H. Dowling (1844-1911) was originally an American minister of the Disciples of Christ, an Army chaplain during the Civil War, as well as an advocate of Prohibition.

This book was first published in 1908; the publisher's back cover copy states that "After forty years of study and silent meditation, Levi reached a state of spiritual consciousness that permitted hiim to enter the domain of these superfine ethers and interpret their mysteries. He found that every thought of every living thing is recorded in these ethers. These, then, are the 'akashic records' from which Levi transcribed his great work." The book is divided (in biblical style) into 22 "Sections," then into chapters (which go throughout the book rather than "re-setting" with each new section), and verses; each chapter has a helpful summary preceding it.

The book begins with Jesus' birth to Joseph ("a devoted Essene"; I, 1:12) and Mary (nothing is said of a "virgin birth"). Jesus and John ("the Harbinger") leave home with their parents' blessing and are taught Hinduism and Zoroastrianism (III, 10) and Buddhism (III, 11). Jesus is critical of a Rabbi (V, 17) who does not understand that "I see a golden cord that runs through all the Ten Commands that binds them fast and makes them one. This cord is love, and it belongs to every word of all the Ten Commands." (V, 17:3-4) Rabbi Hillel recognizes Jesus' worth, and calls him "the Day Star from on high" (VI, 21:5). Jesus spends years in India (Section VI), Tibet (VII), Persia (VIII), Assyria (IX), Greece (X), and Egypt (XI), where he meets the "Council of the Seven Sages of the World," including China (XII).

Ultimately, however, Jesus returns to Galilee (XI, 60), where John has already begun his ministry (XIII), and he baptizes Jesus (XIII, 64:5-8), after which Jesus goes into the wilderness, where he meets the "tempter" (XIV, 65). Jesus attends a wedding in Cana, and says, "There is no tie more sacred than the marriage tie. The chain that binds two souls in love is made in heaven, and man can never sever it in twain." (XIV, 70:3-4) He drives the merchants out of the Temple (XV, 72), meets again the shepherds who appeared at his birth (XV, 76), travels with his followers (called the "Christines"; XV, 84), selects twelve apostles (XV, 88), and gives the Sermon on the Mount (XVI, 94-101).

He rejects a Pharisee's call for a miracle, instead saying, "The son of man will spend three days and nights within the heart of earth and then come forth again. and men will see and know." (XVI, 107:17) After explaining to the Pharisees his belief about fasting, he explains, "The conscience may be taught. One man may do in conscience what another cannot do." (XVI, 119:20) He feeds 5,000 and walks on the water (XVII), is transfigured (XVII, 129), and explains to his disciples that "the kingdom of God... is just at hand; but men can never see it come" (XVII, 145:5).

After the triumphal entry into Jerusalem (XVII, 151), he is betrayed by Judas (XVIII, 159-160, 164), he institutes the Lord's Supper (XVIII, 160; "This loaf is symbol of my body... so you shall eat the bread of life, and never die"; 160:37-39), is arrested and taken before Pilate, who urges him to flee the country (XVIII, 163), he is tried (XVIII, 166-168), and crucified (XVIII, 170), but he is resurrected (XX) and appears "fully materialised" to his disciples (XXI, 173-175), then to the eastern sages in India (XXI, 176) and Greece (XXI, 178), and then establishes the Christine Church (XXII, 182).

This is obviously not a work for those studying the "historical Jesus"; but this book is one of the most influential "alternative" theories of Jesus' life, and is of ongoing appeal to persons looking for such.

The Oxford Handbook of the Victorian Novel (Oxford Handbooks)From Oxford University Press

Much has been written about the Victorian novel, and for good reason. The cultural power it exerted (and, to some extent, still exerts) is beyond question. The Oxford Handbook of the Victorian Novel contributes substantially to this thriving scholarly field by offering new approaches to familiar topics (the novel and science, the Victorian Bildungroman) as well as essays on topics often overlooked (the novel and classics, the novel and the OED, the novel, and allusion). Manifesting the increasing interdisciplinarity of Victorian studies, its essays situate the novel within a complex network of relations (among, for instance, readers, editors, reviewers, and the novelists themselves; or among different cultural pressures - the religious, the commercial, the legal). The handbook's essays also build on recent bibliographic work of remarkable scope and detail, responding to the growing attention to print culture. With a detailed introduction and 36 newly commissioned chapters by leading and emerging scholars beginning with Peter Garside's examination of the early nineteenth-century novel and ending with two essays proposing the 'last Victorian novel' the handbook attends to the major themes in Victorian scholarship while at the same time creating new possibilities for further research. Balancing breadth and depth, the clearly-written, nonjargon -laden essays provide readers with overviews as well as original scholarship, an approach which will serve advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and established scholars. As the Victorians get further away from us, our versions of their culture and its novel inevitably change; this Handbook offers fresh explorations of the novel that teach us about this genre, its culture, and, by extension, our own.

Hamlet was a wimp.
By snap shot hex
I was reading an early version published in 1990. Hamlet was the longest play written by Shakespeare. The Freudian point of view had Hamlet reduced to piffle by his relationship with his mother, Gertude, who married Hamlet's uncle to remain queen after Hamlet's father died. The ghost of Hamlet's father demanded revenge. Hamlet did not want to kill the king when he was praying because the moment might take such an evil man straight to heaven. Critics search tacky details for an objective correlative for the muddle Hamlet keeps telling us about.

According to Ernest Jones, Hamlet is plunged into anguish at the thought of his father being replaced in his mother's affection by someone else. It is as if his devotion for his mother had made him so jealous for her affection that he . . . could not endure to share it with still another man. Ophelia loves Hamlet so too much of water put her in an early grave.

If life gives you lemmings, tell the lemmings to have a nice day.

Jacqueline Rose has a French point of view based on a lot of Lacan. Green and Winnicott make Hamlet so infantile that there is as yet no self, lost in the other side of representation the woman appears where language and aesthetic form start to crumble or else where they have not yet come to be.

People can watch TV longer than Shakespeare could keep anything on stage. There must be experts now in manipulation of monetary mushroom clouds to produce the kind of mind control now Hamlet was missing.

Goodnight, Sweet Prince!

Harold Bloom's Major Literary Character Series would be incomplete without Hamlet, William Shakespeare's tragic hero. This book is a compilation of essays and in-depth analysis. With Bloom's Major Literary Character Series, you should be familiar with Hamlet. This book includes Harold Bloom's essay, "The Analysis of Character," which is the same in every book in this series. He includes an editor's note, introduction, a character profiles, contributors' profiles, bibliography and an index.

The book includes essays from notable literary scholars like "Hamlet," by William Hazlitt; "Hamlet" by A.C. Bradley; "Hamlet," by Harold C. Goddard; "Superposed Plays; Hamlet," by Richard A. Lanham; "Hamlet," by William Empson; "Hamlet," by Northrop Frye; "Readiness, Ripeness: Hamlet, Lear," by Yves Bonnefoy; "Truant Dispositions: Hamlet and Machiavelli," by Julia Lupton; "The Melancholy Dane," by Bert O. States; "Hamlet and the Ghost of Purgatory: Intimations of Killing the Father," by Anthony Low; and "A King of Infinite Space," by John Lee.

The world renowned literary scholar and critic, Professor Harold Bloom, is indeed the foremost expert on anything by William Shakespeare. You can read his enthusiasm in his introduction about Hamlet. He certainly enjoys William Shakespeare more than most people. This book is aimed at literary scholars and perhaps students studying Hamlet for a class. The more familiar you are with Hamlet, the better the book is for you as a reader.

Cellular Biophysics, Vol. 1: Transport, by Thomas Fischer Weiss

Cellular Biophysics is a quantitatively oriented basic physiology text for senior undergraduate and graduate students in bioengineering, biophysics, physiology, and neuroscience programs. It will also serve as a major reference work for biophysicists.Developed from the author's notes for a course that he has taught at MIT for many years, these books provide a clear and logical explanation of the foundations of cell biophysics, teaching transport and the electrical properties of cells from a combined biological, physical, and engineering viewpoint. Each volume contains introductory chapters that motivate the material and present it in a broad historical context. Important experimental results and methods are described. Theories are derived almost always from first principles so that students develop an understanding of not only the predictions of the theory but also its limitations. Theoretical results are compared carefully with experimental findings and new results appear throughout. There are many time-tested exercises and problems as well as extensive lists of references. The volume on transport is unique in that no other text on this important topic develops it clearly and systematically at the student level. It explains all the principal mechanisms by which matter is transported across cellular membranes and describes the homeostatic mechanisms that allow cells to maintain their concentrations of solutes, their volume, and the potential across the membrane. Chapters are organized by individual transport mechanisms -- diffusion, osmosis, coupled solute and solvent transport, carrier-mediated transport, and ion transport (both passive and active). A final chapter discusses the interplay of all these mechanisms in cellular homeostasis.

Review
"In this two volume series Weiss lays the foundations of cellular biophysics on physical principles in a framework that should be easily accessible to any student with a basic understanding of calculus and differential equations. The extensive set of thoughtful problems provided with each chapter will be invaluable in solidifying the student's understanding. I think it will be tremendous fun to teach from these texts." --Murray B. Sachs, Massey Professor and Director, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University "This beautiful treatment of cellular biophysics is a landmark. It is comprehensive, scholarly, interesting and clear as a bell. Everyone seriously interested in how cells do business with their surroundings will want to read it." --Charles F. Stevens, The Salk Institute
