Elias M. Stein is the Albert Baldwin Dod Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University. Rami Shakarchi received his PhD in mathematics from Princeton University. They are the coauthors of "Complex Analysis, Fourier Analysis," and "Real Analysis" (all Princeton).

Professor Stein's final book is a tour de force

Functional analysis is the fourth and final book in Elias Stein's and Rami Shakarchi'sPrinceton lectures in analysis. Elias Stein is a world authority on harmonic analysis and it is not surprising therefore that the first book in the series was on Fourier analysis. The second and third books covered complex and real analysis. He is also a winner of the prestigious Wolf Prize which is granted, at least in part, for excellence in communication of mathematical ideas: "For his contributions to classical and Euclidean Fourier analysis and for his exceptional impact on a new generation of analysts through his eloquent teaching and writing."

These books were based on lectures given at Princeton and therefore reflect the standard of mathematics teaching at Princeton, but more importantly they reflect what Stein wanted to do by bringing together a life time of knowledge and insights concerning Fourier theory. My understanding (which comes from someone within the functional analysis "mafia") is that Professor Stein really wanted to set a benchmark for doing Fourier series and functional analysis properly and that has informed the way he has approached these four books. The synthesis of ideas is excellent and even though I learned Fourier theory from a very able man, I was always hankering for the bigger deal - the broader connections. At the top level of mathematics the "helicopter" view is actually the hardest thing to do - just think of Littlewood's three principles: (a) every measurable set is nearly a finite sum of intervals; (b) every absolutely integrable function is nearly continuous; and (c) every pointwise convergent sequence of functions is nearly uniformly convergent. These three simple principles are but the tip of a massive analytical iceberg.

It is clear that there is a real passion for Fourier series and its tantalising applications which are extraordinarily diverse. When Fourier initially developed the seemingly outrageous theory in the early part of the 19th century, little did he know the astonishing applications that his theory would have. The sheer generality of Fourier series has in turn generated extremely subtle issues which have exercised the minds of some great mathematicians over the years. You cannot properly understand Fourier theory until you really appreciate the subtlety of the convergence issues that it poses. Stein's series of books are all about really deeply understanding why the theory works as well as it does.

Because these books are written for a mathematically sophisticated undergraduate audience they are in my view not really suitable for a struggling student. They are not suitable for an electrical engineering student, say, who just wants to know how to bang out Fourier or Laplace transforms. This is not the audience for these books. They are in fact like a complex French meal that requires a suitably chosen white or red wine to complement the overall meal. Indeed, I sometimes take one of the four volumes down to Bondi Beach to watch the waves and reflect on the depth of the material which is reinforced by the numerous exercises and problems. The exposition is very clear and the proofs are easy to follow (assuming the reader has the requisite background knowledge). There is an enormous amount of material in the exercise and problems which really amplify and reinforce the material in the text. There are some quite difficult problems but there are many hints which take you sequentially through the solution and in my experience these hints do indeed lead you systematically to the full solution. That is not to say that you don't have to do a lot of work to get there. In fact I have published detailed solutions to some of his exercises and problems.

The volume on functional analysis is actually quite different to other "classical texts" dealing with functional analysis. For instance Rudin's textbook on functional analysis has quite a different emphasis to Stein's introduction to the subject. Stein devotes a whole chapter to applications of the Baire category theory while Rudin devotes a page. Stein does this because it provides some insights into establishing the existence of a continuous but nowhere differentiable function as well as the existence of a continuous function with Fourier series diverging a point. Thus what he is doing is providing a much more holistic and integrated approach to the subject than occurs in other approaches which are much more narrowly focused. In terms of overall feel I think he is closest in philosophical approach to Frigyes Riesz whose book "Functional Analysis" (with Bela Sz.-Nagy) is so different to the more modern books. Riesz in fact "talks" through some proofs without elaborate algebra.

Stein covers the applications of functional analysis to probability theory and the vehicle he uses is Rademacher functions which enables a quick derivation of the square root law for sums of Bernoulli trials. This leads into a chapter on Brownian motion which starts with a quotation from Joe Doob which says in part that "Norbert Wiener..was so unfamiliar with the standard probability techniques even at elementary levels that his methods were so clumsily indirect that some of his own doctoral students did not realize that his Brownian motion process had independent increments". Those of us who have attempted hacking through Doob's impenetrable books will appreciate the irony in this quotation. Having said that Stein's approach to the construction of Brownian motion is different to the approaches taken by the finance world writers. He develops Brownian motion in the context of solving Dirichlet's problem generally. This is what you would expect from an expert in harmonic analysis. There is a very useful chapter oscillatory integrals in Fourier analysis which develops the theory behind averaging operators and curvature.

The book also contains all the other "usual suspects" of functional analysis - Banach spaces, LP spaces, Hardy spaces and so on.

Because this is the last book in the series it is worth going back on reviewing the scope of what has been achieved. When you do this, you appreciate what a superb job has been done in bringing the whole sprawling area together. A lifetime of work has been reflected in these books and any student who can do every single problem and exercise would indeed be destined for great things.

AMAZING!!

I absolutely LOVED this book! When I saw it was coming out I screamed!! Yellowfang is my favorite cat from the Warriors series (besides Firestar) and to hear her story was the best. I devoured this book within a week. There were moments in the book where I was almost brought to tears or came close to trowing my kindle across the room in anger (dang Brokenster >:/ ) All in all this book was an AMAZING read, I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could!

You're a mousebrain if you don't like Yellowfang!

We know of Yellowfang's life in ThunderClan, but what of her life in ShadowClan? We know she broke the medicine code by taking Raggedstar as a mate, and she gave birth to Brokenkit. Brokenkit was nursed by another ShadowClan queen called Lizardstripe, and the clan was told the real mother of Brokenkit wished to have her identity kept secret. After Brokenkit's birth, Raggedstar ignored Yellowfang. Many cats assumed that Raggedstar's deputy was the mother, for she was always a bit secretive. Raggedstar was oblivious to Brokentail's ambition and violent ways, and soon he was Shadowclan deputy. Brokentail killed his own father to become leader of ShadowClan. Brokenstar was killed by his own mother by being fed deathberries while being held prisoner in ThunderClan camp. He was the leader of the dark forest, until Yellowfang killed him for the last time. But what about Yellowfang's life as a kit, and an apprentice? Here is where we will find out.

Another fine addition to the Warriors universe

Fans of the Warriors series will instantly recognise the name Yellowfang, the (in)famous medicine cat of ThunderClan and ShadowClan. But what fans don't know is the complete story of Yellowfang's past, starting with her as a kit. In Yellowfang's Secret, we witness Yellowkit yearning to become a fearless warrior--and when she receives her warrior name, Yellowfang, she's dismayed to discover that her true destiny lies as a medicine cat. And there is also a terrible secret she must keep, one associated with an ominous prophecy, one that could destroy them all.

There were many elements present in Yellowfang's Secret also present in the main Warriors series that made them both so enjoyable. For example, there's always an underlying tone of conflict between loyalty to oneself and loyalty to the Clan in Yellowfang's Secret, which creates some dramatic tension. And there's also the uniqueness of getting to see the inner workings of another Clan besides ThunderClan--especially so since most of ShadowClan has been (pardon the pun) shadowed in mystery. Not to mention that we all know that Yellowfang is a medicine cat, and we get to view the world from the viewpoint of a medicine cat much less than from a warrior's point. There are also your traditional battles, Gatherings, and lots of things that make the Warriors series so beloved to its fans.

However, there were also two main issues that prevented me from fully enjoying the book. First of all, the characterisation. Yellowfang as seen in the first Warriors arc is a slightly grumpy, slightly disheveled, and very sarcastic cat. Here in this book, though, she feels very tame and obedient. This would be fine if it were just at the beginning of the book, but even at the end, when the storyline segues into Into the Wild, Yellowfang is not the Yellowfang we know for the most part. And secondly, the book was too long! The obvious drawback of writing a prequel is that your fans know what's going to happen overall, so in a prequel, it's going to be the little details that matter. But Yellowfang's Secret seems so overloaded with details, it drags the book down. In my opinion, there is way too much time spent on Yellowfang as a kit. I get that this is supposed to be a Super Edition, and Super Editions are supposed to be 500+ pages, but I think this would have been better just at the standard 300 pages or so.

Overall, Yellowfang's Secret is a book that provides valuable insight for Warriors fans. The fourth and final arc of Warriors ended in April, and that makes this book even more special, especially for Yellowfang fans. I wouldn't say it's a must-buy like some of the other Super Editions (Bluestar's Prophecy anyone?), but for die-hard fans, it is certainly a must-read.

About the Author
Nicknamed "Slim Darley", the late H.C.H. Darley was formerly a member of the Institute of Petroleum in London, an active member within SPE, and a Researcher for Shell for almost 25 years as well as a Consultant. Darley earned a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from Birmingham University in the UK, and Mr. Darley passed away in 1996.

The late George Gray, or "Doc Gray", as he was known in the industry, was a drilling fluids technologist for NL Baroid for over 30 years and a pioneer in the development of drilling fluids technology. He willingly served on innumerable committees and held various offices in technical societies, including Director and Vice President of SPE and various poistions within the American Chemical Society and American Petroleum Institute. George earned a BS degree from Texas Christian University and a MS and PHD degree from Rice University and was a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. George passed away in 1983.

Though this book is little dated, the theory and principles are still applicable to today. Some of the techniques and practices have been updated to meet today's enviromental standards. This book is the "bible" for mud engineer's and chemist designing drilling fluids for the oil industry.

If you like military SciFi then Dan Abnett is a good choice. Darker than John Ringo or David Weber, his books are intriguing, riviting, and exciting. I would recomend them to anyone who enjoys the military SciFi genre.

Mystery and intrigue in spades! Fanatic book!

Marina Alexander is a rescue expert called to a cave collapse and things only get more interesting from there! This is the second Marina Alexander book and I find that I just can't put them down! The excitement and suspense make this one of those books you stay up late to read. You don't want to do anything except find out what happens next.

Marinas family is a bit different than yours or mine. They are the Skaladeskas. They worship Gaia, or mother earth, as if she were a benevolent being. And they will stop at nothing to prevent her continued destruction. Even eco-terrorism. They need Marina to join them, she is the last in the ancient blood line of the Alexandrovs. The last in line to be able to lead the Skaladeskas. But she doesn't believe.

Marina's grandfather wants her back, before it's too late. He is old and tired and ready to join his "Mother" Gaia. The only thing he has to offer Marina, is his library. A library said to house scrolls, stone tablets and artifacts from ancient civilizations never seen before. It is a hard choice for Marina. But the way they go about stopping the destruction of the earth is a bit unconventional. They use things that mother earth already has on her arsenal. Natural occurring this. The FBI & the CIA are doing all they can to stop the actions of this group of eco terrorists. They know Marina is the key and their link to the Skaladeskas.

The journey in this book takes us from a Michigan cave all the way to the Amazon rain forests, with some excellent science thrown in to the awesome and mysterious goings on. All the way to New York boardrooms. You will not be disappointed!
I want more! What happens with the characters? New and old? I can't wait for the next book. Marina is one tough lady.

Colleen Gleason is a very talented writer. She can draw you in and make you care what happens to her characters. She can make you wish the book was longer and shorter in the same instant. You want get to tell you what halogens but not too fast! You want to know how things play out, but she leaves you with just enough of a question that you must get the next book. Highly recommended! 5 out of 5 starts for me!

This was a real page turner of a book and I couldn't put it down! There was suspense enough to keep me hooked and coming back for more .......and more! The mystery/science was haunting and raised my consciousness of many issues in the world today while the story line kept me hopeful for the future. There was romance too.....But it was subtle and it never overtook the story and left me waiting to see what might happen in a future episode! This book was a second in a series but was easily read as a stand alone book ..... - however, don't miss the first book - Siberian Treasure - if you want another great read! Have read several of this author's books in other genres and really like her style of writing!

A great sequal to Siberian Treasure!

I enjoyed the second Marina Alexander adventure just as much as the first adventure, Siberian Treasure. I liked how everything was taking place at once, all over the world, and how Ms. Gleason was able to pull it all together, just as she did in the first book, to weave the story. I enjoyed the characters that continued into the sequal as well as an important new edition to this book, Dr. Sanchez. I look forward to seeing what the next adventure for Marina will be. Will will she be forced to become part of the Skaladeska tribe and be able learn what historical mysteries are hidden the the Skaladeska library? Or will she be able to help the Skaladeskas voice be heard, in a non terrorist way, and be able to unlock the hidden mysteries that the ancient library holds?
