About the Author
Norman L. Geisler (Ph.D., Loyola University of Chicago) has taught at top evangelical schools for over fifty years and is distinguished professor of apologetics and theology at Veritas Evangelical Seminary in Murrieta, California. Updated Subjects Make it Even Better Than Original

This is the best book I've read on Christian ethics (though the Feinberg's book on the subject is a close second). I had read the original, but with the additional chapters and appendixes this is even better. Some of the new subjects include pornography,alcohol/drugs,general sexual morality,animal rights, environmental issues,birth control and gambling. Though some would consider ethics kind of a dry subject, there are passages in this book,that inspired me to live a more holy life,with practical application. Geisler speaks the truth in love. Highly recommended.

Geisler's Logic

Norman Geisler does a great job of presenting various different philosophies and worldviews. Here, the reader will find the worldviews of Secular Humanism, Darwinian Evolution, Antinomianism, Situationism, Generalism, Unqualified Absolutism, and Conflicting Absolutism. The author addresses how these views affect one's basis for ethical decisions. The author then goes on to tackle abortion, infanticide, euthanasia, biomedical issues, capital punishment, war, sexuality, marriage, divorce, ecology, and animal rights. He presents fundamental biblical based answers to these issues. This book is ideal for any Christian who desires to go deeper in their understanding of current issues from a biblical worldview. It is not "lite" reading; however, it is very logical. Geisler presents in a systematic way which provides academic building blocks for the next point he makes and the conclusions he draws. I would recommend this book for any Christian who desires to give a reasonable defense of the Faith--being always ready to give an answer for the hope within.

Dr. Geisler's work is exceptionally well-researched, well-documented and well-written. His arguments are both powerfully supported and rationally coherent.

While his detailed, in-depth analyses of complex issues, and his introduction of numerous, abstruse concepts (such as emotivism, reconstructionism, selectivism and solipsism) might render the book more appropriate as a university textbook for use at the graduate, if not the undergraduate level, it nevertheless commends itself as an exceptional resource for those readers seeking a thorough, comprehensive, and up-to-date reference in the field of Christian ethics.

As arguably the most reasoned, comprehensive and authoritative, general text on Christian ethics to date, it speaks extensively to the world's current state of rampant and callous depravity. Thus it deserves a prominent place in the library of every serious student of Christian ethics, apologetics or theology.

Phaidon Press is pleased to announce the publication of Iron Fists: Branding the 20th Century Totalitarian State by Steven Heller, the first illustrated survey of the propaganda art, graphics, and artifacts created by the totalitarian governments of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and the Communist regimes of the USSR and China. The book sets the disturbingly powerful graphic devices in historical context.



The infamous symbols produced by these regimes are recognized universally: the swastika and gothic typography of Hitler's Germany, Mussolini's streamlined Futurist posters and Black Shirt uniforms, the stolid Social Realism of Stalin's USSR and Mao s Little Red Book. Author Steven Heller, a world-renowned design historian, who has long collected two-and-three-dimensional examples from this period, reveals how these symbols were used in a wide variety of propaganda, from posters, magazines and advertisements to uniforms, flags and figurines.



In addition to using logos and symbols, all of the leaders researched in this book deliberately cultivated certain personal characteristics (Hitler's mustache, Mussolini's baldness, Lenin's goatee, Mao's smile), in an attempt to transform their corporeal selves into icons. These regime personalities were blanketed across public venues, from monuments to postage stamps. The Nazis, for example, installed an intricate graphic program that featured Hitler s face as a ''logo,'' a system remarkably similar to modern corporate identity creations.



By integrating color images of artifacts with archival black and white photographs, Iron Fists offers unique insight into how these regimes were effective in using graphic design to further their causes. In the section on Fascist Italy, for example, there are numerous reproductions of stylized posters, magazines and handbooks designed to excite impressionable youth. Heller then connects this printed propaganda with historic photographs of Italian children dressed as men prepared for battle stoic and serious their small hands clutching guns instead of toys.



Divided into four sections by regime, Heller also explores the color systems (each dictatorship had a distinctive palette), typefaces, and slogans used to both rally and terrorize the populace. In result, he demonstrates how these elements were used to ''sell'' the totalitarian message. The first extensively illustrated book on the subject, Iron Fists will have an obvious appeal to graphic designers but will also be an important contribution to the study of the history of the totalitarian state.

About the Author
Steven Heller, co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author program at the School of Visual Arts, New York, was a senior art director at the New York Times for 33 years. He has served as contributing editor to several magazines, including Print, Eye, Baseline, and I.D. and is currently editor of AIGA VOICE: Online Journal of Design. He is the author, co-author, and/or editor of over 100 books on design and popular culture and has produced and curated a number of exhibitions. Heller is the recipient of several design awards including the AIGA Medial for Lifetime Achievement in 1999 and the Society of Illustrators Richard Gangel Award for Art Direction in 2006. He lives in New York City

The enforcement mechanism of totalitarianism

A fascinating book, Iron Fists looks at the way in which Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Soviet Russia and Mao's China created cultural environments which promoted the state through the use of what we now call branding. Lavishly illustrated with artwork and photographs the book also includes instructional material the regimes created in order to provide consistency of the brand. Without going into too much detail the book also discussed the cult of personalities surrounding Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini and Mao, each of which were an integral part of their respective "brands." This is a neat book, a good collection of the "styles" without being a catalog, a discussion of totalitarian "branding" without becoming some sort of hyper-intellectual 500-page discourse. One thing I don't get is the black bars on the cover.

Well depicted, and explained treatise on the graphic design in totalitarian states.
Especially insightful was the intersection of the styles more broadly employed world wide.
Those interested in graphic design and the people who capably labor in anonymity have a great champion in Steven Heller and his several collaborators.

rip off, sorry but it's true.

While anything with Clavell's name attached to it is simply marvelous - and don't get me wrong, this is still a wonderful story - this is just the incomplete, chopped up, TV version of his incredible book 'Whirlwind.' There is nothing new; don't let the 'love story' bit fool you. Entire plots and characters are left out, or are mentioned only in passing. There is no intelligent reason to buy this book. Buy Whirlwind instead. Coronet Books has managed to take money from me for an incomplete version of a book I have already read. Disgusting. Three stars is very, very generous.

Watered down Whirlwind...

Unfortunately, James Clavell and his publisher fought during the last few years of his life. The result was that his final Asian saga novel, Whirlwind, is out of print. Escape is a watered down version of that novel, developed for a movie script. The core story is still there, but to get Clavell's intended story, buy Whirlwind at a used bookstore or online auction site.

For this to be the shop manual, it did not contain any information as to working on the engine.... Doesn't tell u how to take off the cylinder heads or nothing... Doesnt even show the valves...

The Bently manual is a great resource for anyone who buys a used car. Even if you don't work on the car yourself, it has information on service schedules, upgrades, and how to check fluid levels and other functions of the car.

Missed my model on the fringe

Book has great diagrams. This is not a repair manual but a reference manual. My model is a 1998 A6 Quattro wagon. Several places, primarily in the electrical stuff, it misses my model or the picts do not show whats really in my car. Instance is there is no wiring diagram for the "1998 central locking system". Diagrams start with 1999. Also, no picts to show where windows system breakers are located for this model. A pict and diagram shows them to be under the drivers foot well, but after taking my panels off, its no where to be seen.

Great introduction section in the beginning of the manual to discuss differences between models, years, and options. Good functional info on transmissions and engines there too.

So far, its the best there is out there, but as most all these type books, they fall short. It is worth it for the info and diagrams it does contain.

This is a great book for learning how to use the Genogram.

This should be a requirement for any Marriage and Family student or therapist. This book explains each part of the genogram (Symbols ect.), what patterns to look for in a genograms, and even how to take a genogram history. It includes many examples of famous people. Must have!

Fun and educational

I used this book to complete a project in my Chemical Dependancy and the Family class. The book has great diagrams to follow and a assortment of them as well. It describes how to complete the genogram and how it can be set up. Worked well.
