Great Concept, Relatively Unhelpful

I purchased this book as the text for our surgical book club. We spent almost four months reading this book and reviewing it chapter by chapter. It's pretty and with excellent illustrations. However, it is not terribly insightful or well written. The concept is good at first blush, then you realize that it's a bit tedious to read that unexpected hemorrhage is a potential pitfall to every single operation. It would've been nice if the individual authors had detailed the specific risks of bleeding related to each operation, e.g.., injury the corona mortis during inguinal herniorhaphy. Unfortunately, the writing never reaches that level of quality and the editing is insufficient to the task. If a second edition is contemplated, it will need a complete rewrite to overcome its rather glaring inadequacies.

For the newly practicing surgeons and senior residents

For me, this textbook seems to have every little fine detail and pearl of wisdom regarding avoiding intraoperative and postoperative errors that I would document from my former surgery attendings. It has already bailed me out in two cases since my purchase; thus, it's definitely a keeper. I highly recommend this text as an adjunct to either Sabiston or Cameron, and would definitely continue to review the related chapters prior to any of my big cases. Thanks.
