Excellent Explanation of French Style

Ali Martine explained French Style in very few words and in a very easy way to understand. Then she goes on to describe how to get there. This book puts everything together in a slightly different manner than others by Anne Barone or Ines de la Fressange, but it was so much clearer to me. The author is an American expat in France and works in fashion.

Oui, oui, oui!!!

I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did - nor to be inspired by it. The title is a bit misleading - you think it's going to be the same old, same old, but there are lots of great insights. The sample appeared to indicate that the book was a bit different to the bog-standard "French Chic" genre (everyone's so chic and clean and predictable and boring) and I was happy to discover that the book lived up to the sample! (Don't you hate it when the sample is sometimes better than the book???? Or the sample is just pages and pages of credits/acknowledgements and thank you's????? How useful is that?) This book reveals that the real secret of French chic is being a unique, eclectic, who cares what people think, individual. It gave me a swagger, confidence and a much needed swish of je ne sais quoi.

Great usable advice!!

The author of this book took the time to explain that building a classic chic wardrobe is not so much the actual clothing but a mindset and a lifestyle. I can go out and buy a little black dress, a few scarves and a pair of killer heels-throw in a bottle of Chanel-and voila! I'm Deneuve. Right? Non. I'm me in heels smelling expensive but I' not there yet. This book explains the mindset-and the hard work-it takes to look like you own the world. It other words to be French. Nicely written and concise. Well done.
